I've only owned my Bugeye for a mere four months so forgive me if this question represents common knowledge. (I did not locate any information on it via the Search function). Why is it that I often see two different styles for the front grill? One of the grills (which I believe represents the standard design since it is more prevalent) contains a chrome strip which runs along the top whereas the other grill does not contain this chrome strip and merely presents the mesh component (see, for example, Bugzuki).

Were both of these grills available from the factory or does the second variety represent an aftermarket part?

The second grill has had the top cut off.
 
First off, welcome to the forum and congrats on your bugeye. There is not a bad question, we all are asking questions to increase our knowledge of these neat old cars. What is really neat is usually there is an answer here.
 
And the rest of the story.

Back when these things were new we thought it was much better looking without the top part of the grill. The style then was to do away with chrome.
 
Another spin was to cut out every other mesh for increased cooling.

And welcome to our sanctuary.
 
Also, when the original grill got too ratty a lot of people got creative with "homemade" grill inserts! Removal of the chrome made the car look "racier" to some! I personally like the grid painted black with just the chrome "brow and rim", not original, but I like the look!
