You gotta pull the cover to change it, or will it pop out the front like American stuff. Exploded view looks like it might have to come out the back. Mines too dirty to tell from a glance. Hap?

Cover must be pulled on an A series.

And if you're gonna go thru th' drill, have an appropriate "Speedi-Sleeve" to-hand just in case.

Once you're there ya can inspect the chain 'n tensioner, too.

Only the later 948s and the 1098 A series can be change with the cover in place, the 1275 and 1500 both have to have the cover removed, if we talking early 948 felt seal, good luck with that, it takes dyanmite to change them

Sorry, I aways assume people know what I have. 1500 and yeah, I need to get the speedy sleeve. Mine is POURING oil out. ( well, not pouring, but the entire underside of the car is wet.) I have been driving it at 70 MPH or so and it always seems to leak worse. I need to plumb a PVC valve in it, but I've been lazy. It's easier to just add oil. I'll wait till the summer and pull the engine. If I gotta pull the cover, might as well do everything else I want to. I have a chain and tensioner here, cam gear too. Need to get the crank gear though. Gonna rebuild it and go 9-1. I'd like to go higher. Does anyone else make 10-1 pistons that are reasonable?

As an aside, you might want to put your car's information in your signature in your profile - then it is there every post - it's a little thing but it truly makes everyone's lives easier

No they use the same seal as the 1275, the cover just requires the seal be put in form the fornt, rather than the rear. I'm tearing a 948 customer engine down for rebuild right now, and it must have been a later one, because it has the seal like the 1098, possibly was done by a previous owner, alot of theime if the 948s has the flet seal cover, I try to find the later 1098 style rubber seal covers to use on them.

I tried to use my rope seal cover when I rebuilt mine 9-10 years ago. All I accomplished was getting to see my timing chain one more time. It now has the 1098 cover. To be honest I should have put a ready sleeve on it as it leaves a dime sized spot when you shut the thing down and only when first shut down.It will idle dry all day long. Not quite sure as to the reason behind the logig of this but heck I'm not going to complain after hearing the stories of oil pump out of both ends of some carseven withall the fancy venting catch can stuff.
