Without running interstates.

I'm trying to map out a route from here (metro STL) to Grand Rapids for the MG Revival Party next weekend. I would rather take 2-3 extra hours and stay off the interstates as much as possible. I've been working on this with the help of my atlas & IL/IN state maps, but I was wondering if any of you know of a website that I can get driving directions withOUT driving interstates. I tried google maps, yahoo maps, msn, mapquest, mapblast etc.

Have you downloaded the free version of Google Earth ( https://earth.google.com/) yet? It is an amazing world globe program that uses satellite imagry and blows away anything else like TerraServer. You can view actual terrain of an area and map it out...it will actually DRIVE your route so that you can see what your course will be like! It also gives you layers of things such as gas stations, retail shopping, hospitals, school, etc. I stayed up until 2:30 the first night I downloaded it so be forewarned!!

I'm surprised it doesn't just take IL-51 North, which turns into LaGrange Rd and nears "Chicagoland". From there, cut across Indiana and find a road going North on the Atlas I guess. How do you like those directions? Not very good, I know, but I used to drive a B from Chicago to St. Louis, and always took 51. Its really a nice drive. Thats about all, I can remember, but I left the road (a 2-laner) and ended up in Indiana really quick. Maybe check it out?
 
OK, you get through Illinois, and I'll get you the rest of the way there. I live in NW Ind. just outside of Chicago, lived in Grand Rapids for several years and still get up there regularly, and spent the first 20 years of my life in SW Michigan...so I know my way around.

Enter Indiana somewhere and get to U.S. 30 in Lake County. If you want to enter Indiana further south, you can take US 41 north to U.S. 30.

Option 1: Take U.S. 30 east through Schereville, Merrillville, and towards Valparaiso. At Valparaiso, take IN-49 North- both 30 and 49 are divided highways, but not limited access and w/ a 55 MPH speed limit.

Option 2: If you want to avoid the more populated parts of NW IN, enter Indiana further south, get on U.S. 41 and go north to Lowell, IN. At Lowell, take IN 2 east to U.S. 231. Turn north onto U.S. 231 and go to Hebron, IN, at Hebron, turn east onto IN 8 and take it to Kouts, IN. At Kouts, turn north onto IN 49.

No matter which of the above you use, Take IN 49 north to Chesterton, then get on US 12 east towards Michigan City. Follow US 12 where it curves north in Michigan City (IN), it will soon enter Michigan.

At New Buffalo Michigan, US 12 turns east. At that intersection, go north, do not turn east. You will be on Blue Star Memorial Highway. That highway goes by various other names ("A2", "Lakeshore Drive", "88th St.", ), but it is always the Blue Star. It hugs the Lake Michigan shore most of the way up and is quite scenic and a relaxed drive up to Saugatuck.

Now, were it me, I would just hop on 196 at Saugatuck and take it straight into GR. It is a relatively short stint on the interstate.

This may take you a bit longer than interstate the whole way, but it isn't bad at all.
 
Thanks! I plotted out Hwy 4 to 54 in IL, 24 into Indiana, (nw of Lafayette) run 25 up to or through Logansport (I'd have to look) 15 into Michigan, then 131, but I agree, at that point, I think jumping on 196 is the best.

I'm going to look at your routes on the map. I like the idea of the lake drive along Lake Michigan!

Ahh, looking at the atlas now. 25 hits 41 just inside the Ind border. I'll come into Indiana much further south than 30 I think.

That looks like a workable route!
