Well now this is comforting.

Woman has breathing problems aboard American Airlines flight yesterday. Requests oxygen but is denied. Requests again, attendant discovers the emergency oxygen tanks are empty.

When she collapses, attendant uses defibrillator. It doesn't work.

Plane diverts for medical emergency landing. Plane lands. Woman is dead.

basil, just kiddin, but thinking about it they could have dragged her up to the cockpit and have the grew drop their masks and put her on 100% oxy, or drop all the masks in the cabin. what they thinkin?????

Well, you'd hope so.

But most passenger cabin maintenance is done by contracted help, not AA crew. Who knows what cost-cutting might be doing on.

baz, the crew and pass. oxy tanks should be part of the preflight, im not sure about aux. Carry around bottles, that might be a maint. responsibility but for shure somebody dropped the ball.
 
Actually, sounds like EAR first aid training was remiss, as defib wont put air in your lungs if cn system is in halt mode,

It's hard to believe that no one on the plane was trained in CPR! In some cases, chest compression and rescue breaths can save lives.

I just cannot understand why NO ONE responded with CPR.

All the more reason for <span style="text-decoration: underline">everyone</span> to get certified in CPR.

Strange.

I agree. I've had CPR training a number of times over the years, but probably wouldn't hurt to get a refresher.
 
Me too. I was certified years ago & a refresher probably wouldn't be a bad idea either. But if I'd of been on that plane I wouldn't hesitated for a moment to help out if I'd been sitting near the woman or had a member of the air crew asked for help over the intercom.

Edit: I just re-read the whole article and it seems that a nurse did try CPR.....

As a clearance diver (ret), with com dive med tech quals,maybe reluctance by those onboard to participate (AIDS)?, sad but is a voluntary decision by those onboard, maybe if was a delectible blond nymph might have been diff outcome
 
With proper, professional training, "reluctance to act" is not usually a factor. Well-trained responders don't hesitate to help, in my experience (I'm a Red Cross Instructor, volunteer).

We teach lay responders how to overcome reluctance to act. It's part of the training.

I'm glad a nurse was on board and responded. It's always good to have a nurse around!

The article says that two doctors and two nurses that were passengers tried to save her. Story does not say what they were doctors of though. The only thing I got from that story was the oxy tanks were empty.
 
This is tragic.

Also makes the story of the two little bimboes being escorted off of a Southwest flight for having a tantrum about "being too pretty and not getting a bottle of water when they wanted it" (and denied any future travel on Southwest, including the second half of their round trip ticket) REALLY insignificant!
