OMG! My hands are freezing. Had to replace my mailbox and post, knocked over Friday night by a young girl who said she had to swerve to avoid another car. One or both were probably texting. Got Teddy from Poland to hammer in the bottom metal part - I did the rest. She and her father showed up on my front porch after the mishap and gave me their names. I thanked them for being so honest. Most people would have just driven off. Anyone else have to replace their mailbox?
 
Yes, due to people turning after getting lost on the road. They drive off and leave the mess to me. Got sick of fixing it, so now the box is fitted to a 4" .120 wall square tube....does a bit of damage to the rear of their vehicle.
Glad that the father is teaching his daughter how things are meant to be handled!!

Yes, twice in perhaps 60-90 days, but not in those conditions. New post was one of those hollow 4x4" steel jobs. I set it concrete and had a lot left over from the bag of mix, so I filled the hollow post with the wet concrete. When a Corrolla hit it and drove off, decimated the post and threw the mailbox a ways. I knew it was a corrolla because some of the car parts he left behind had part numbers on them, I looked those up. I suspect not only did it cost him more than my cost of the post, but maybe more than an old Corrolla was worth. Put in a new post -- duplicated the filled-with concrete feature.
 
That's the kind of post I had Don. What's left of the post is now in my fireplace awaiting Thanksgiving. I hope at least the 450 driver offered to pay like my people.
 
There's always the "no post at the curb" approach:

Never got a dime from the 6 people who hit my mailbox.
I started putting it in a big laundry tub and filled with dirt and had a revolving series of flowers in it
 
Probably had something to do with the Pub down at the corner
 
I had a parishioner years ago who went tore a strip off the Ministry of Transport snowplow drivers for hitting his mailbox. Needless to say he lost about 15 mailboxes that winter.

All that said, I have to at least put out there that while I understand the sentiment of wanting a heavy - solid - concrete filled post - another part says a "flyaway" mailbox might just be a tad safer - particularly as most times they are hit is is by accident. I would certainly hate to cause someone permanent injury.

Someone clipped off my mother's mailbox last spring, sent it halfway into the next lot. Whomever did it was probably coming or going from the bar down the road and never stopped, might not have even noticed... Anyway, the plus side of her being in the small town I grew up in was the local postmaster deciding to relocate the new box down by the house as he didn't like his guy being pulled over on a busy highway. He now pulls down the drive and turns around then heads back out. Works better for my mother too since now in her 80s mobility is becoming an issue.

Got one here. Tired of replacing the metal ones due to juvenile stupidity: two kids on a bicycle, rider with a ball bat. They took out every box on the block. I've had to reinstall the break-away box onto the post about three times in the last few years. Last time was about a month ago, didn't see/hear it that time... but I have my suspicions. :smirk:

Lol. Mine is a 8ft 6x6 cedar post concreted 2 ft into the ground. Lucky for bad drivers I live on a very rural road that only makes a 3 mile loop. I'd hate to see what it does to a car.
 
Since ours is a slot in the garage door, we usually don't have these kinds of problems, but a neighbor did have a wayward tow truck run into his garage.
