Charles Lindbergh flew NY to Paris without a windshield;
they installed a fuel tank in its place. He also had a periscope to see out the front if he wanted to.

Landing was the challenge. Sleep deprived Zen, luck and skill seem to have worked. :wink:

Very cool! Geneseo is not very far from here. That's there the Wings Of Eagles museum was originally. Now it's about 5 miles away from me in Big Flats.

How did they see out the front?

You didn't while taxiing, you S turned and looked out the side of the cockpit. On take off, you used split vision to keep track where the edge of the runway was and got the tail up as soon as rudder control was evident. Once the tail was up, forward visibility was very good. My old Stearman, that a lot of 51 pilots trained in, was the same way. PJ
