If they could do that heading the other direction, I'd REALLY be impressed!

Here's another one...the first one is a guy in our Cessna 150 club, we've got a good number of members up there

What's the reason for the big wheels?? So they can take off at a steeper angle??

I'm going to guess that they are actually to land on soft surfaces - sand and fields etc. I presume that is why these skills are being honed in the first place - short takeoff and landing on makeshift runways

Practicing for this.

They're low pressure tires that let you land on gravel and rough surfaces...plus they give more prop clearance in the bush.

Where they go they don't care about runways  Sand bar, gravel bar, frozen lake, beach...if there's room it's a place to land.

They used to call them Tundra Tires. Maybe that was a brand name.

I think it's more for the other end, coming down

Just working through the move to our new house, so I'm checking in while sitting in a pile of books while using a computer that I just turned on after hooking up....we'll be weeks before we're fully settled in.

Anyway, love tailwheel STOL planes.
I've flown a Huskey, Super Cub and Citabria. Never quite as much of a "jump" as in the videos, but still pretty awesome. The Huskey has Tundra tires. I've taken off and landed that thing in our local grass strip after the snow melt, practicing soft-field work. The fat tires really work.

With my old engine (weak), and two-up on a warm day, my Aeronca took about 900' to get off (and had a climb rate of about 100'). The opposite of all this and really Slooooow.

I once flew a Weedhopper ultralight that had a landing speed of 11 mph. Would "fly" in a slight breeze while tied down.
With even a slight wind, you could fly it "backwards". :jester:

cool! good luck with the move - and of course we'll need pics of the new digs
