Today i dressed off the flywheel for Elvis's 74. see attach. we have two flywheels, the better of the two (ring gear wise) was also the better of the two surface wise. I chucked it up and dressed of the face about 5 thou. came out very nice. Since i was all set up i figured i would do the other one as well. i went about 15 thou and still have some hard spots, see attach. you can see them quite well in the photo, My question is how deep is safe to go? if i go about 30 or so i think they will be gone, granted i could pull the pins out and do the complete surface, then it would probaly matter less how much i went. any thought , opinions and comments welcome.

If you only cut the friction surface part of the flywheel, you will reduce the pressure plate spring preload on the disc. Also, the throwout bearing will be at a different height. Cutting the friction surface only, is equivalent to using a severely worn disc. Much better to cut the entire surface as in the original relationship.

I strongly second Dave. If you machined a step into the flywheel then you are going to have slippage. pull the pins and even the face out.
I'm not sure of the min. thickness on those flywheels, but that's how a lot of guys go about lightening them, so i bet you can do a lot to it. Better look for a spec. first though.
