Hello to all I am new here. I need some help. I am trying to get my Midget on the road it is in middle of restoration, I inherited from my uncle who passed away and only a few parts were labled. I put my first flywheel and clutch on yesterday (never done it before and I thought I did a pretty good job) until I found out in a haynes manual that it says to turn the crank until the number one piston is at the top of it's stroke and put the fly wheel on with the 1/1 at the top. I wasn't looking for this when I put it on and I doubt I got it right by chance so my question is does the flywheel really need to be in this position since the fly wheel is the same all the way around. By the way I've alreay installed the clutch and transmission and starter. Do I need to pull all of this off and do position the flywheel at this position? Thanks in advance

Count this as a good lesson and a "cheap" one, becuase you didn't actually destroy any new parts in the process.

They're right. And Sherman's suggestion that it'll drive you nuts is a bit understated... He likely means it'll CO$T ya.

Half an ounce of "unbalanced" weight can become hundreds of pounds of "lateral thrust" at RPM. You'd be doing the end main bearing a horrible injustice if you chime it up without making sure of the flywheel "alignment".

What if his flywheel has been balanced without considering the TDC mark? That happens from time-to-time with MGB's virtually making a new TDC mark.
 
If the flywheel has been balanced I see no prob with is position.
 
The 1/1 mark is to indicate TDC engine position, and "Straight UP" for the mark on the flywheel. 'course it could have come from some OTHER engine and be COMPLETELY inaccurate. :devilgrin:

I'd not worry over that, and mate it up according to the index.
 
See, the reason for my question is just that: the flywheel doesn't know where TDC is located inside the block....all that matters is that the flywheel bolt pattern matches...now, having said that, I try to align the marks on TDC; however on the little Midget I'm building, the marks were erased when we balanced the flywheel so I out it on as it was balanced to the crankshaft & made myself a new TDC mark.
 
No biggie then. You had the crank, flywheel, rods/pistons done as an assembly. That's proper.

As is re "indexing" the flywheel so if it comes apart again you have the reference. :thumbsup:
