Fluctuating temp gauge

My daughter's '07 Mini's coolant temp gauge has begun wandering. It slowly goes up to the red mark then returns to the middle where it normally remains. I'm going to check the coolant level but I think it's fine. Any ideas?

Sticking thermostat?

The coolant level turned out to be low - about 2" below the minimum line. I refilled with 50/50 mixture and we'll see if there's a leak.

You'll need to do a pressure test of the system as there are a lot of little areas where leaks may come from. The thermostat gaskets were at one time prone to leaks and the oil coolers were a source. Waterpump is behind the supercharger and not easy to check. If you are still in warranty, get it to dealer ASAP before you overheat again and warp the head. (You did say it hit the red). Aluminum engines do not like heat. Are hose still original? Should be changed every 4 years.
