Hi,

Ever since I purchased and restored a 1960 Bugeye, the fuel gauge rocks back and forth while I drive.

Is there a solution to this?

There's nothing wrong with your gauge, they all do it. This type of gauge was used on many other British cars of the era.

You can switch to a later style gauge that uses a voltage stabilizer. These run smoothly and register fuel level very slowly when you turn the ignition on and off. For it to read accurately however, you will most likely need to also change the sending unit in the tank to one that matches the gauge. I'm certain that others here will correct me if I have this wrong, and I welcome that

If you'd like to consider a later gauge, I have one available out of a '73 Midget and also have the voltage stabilizer to go with it. I however, do not have the matching sending unit to go with it.

The later gauge definitely does use a different sender. They are not at all compatible.

Or you can buy a Speedhut Unit tgat will work with both sender and it is programmable so you can “refine “ the accuracy to be very accurate. Dies not look out of Place. BE Guy sells this unit or but direct from SpeedHut.

How much movement are we talking about here? The gauge is not "damped" so it responds pretty much instantly to any movement of the fuel in the tank as well as sudden movements to the car itself. I would guess any movement up to maybe 1/4 tank is probably a little unusual but to real sign for concern.
