Floor replacement

Am going to replace the floors on my BE including the "trunk" floor. Anybody got any good reports on the various suppliers? Joe in SC

I bought (and have installed) floor panels, rocker panels and the area directly behind the rear wheels (not the trunk floor) from Moss. Comes with an easily removable black paint as an anti-rust until you get it. Everything fit very well, EXCEPT..... The front floor panels go from the outboard sill flange to slightly inboard of the tunnel flange. That means that if you remove the floor material that is directly below the tunnel the left/right new floor halves will not cover the bottom of the tunnel.

This is not a problem as that part in totally flat, and can easily be fabricated with commercial sheet metal. I bought a 4'X4' piece from local steel supply. You'll discover that you always need extra sheet metal for other areas that you didn't figure on. Also, due to stack up of the structural fittings for the rear spring box, you will need to remove part of the Moss floor in that area and fill area with sheet metal. Its not a big deal. The interior side wall panels by driver's and passenger's feet may have some rust. These areas are flat and you can use the extra sheet metal. General rule - if it is badly rusted, get rid of it. Don't count on POR to replace sheet metal.

The external floor stiffeners and stamped bubble channels are very good. The outer perimeter of the panels have well bent weld flanges. Can't tell you about trunk floor. To avoid body warpage/twist, you MUST fabricate an angle iron (or heavy tube) brace/strut to add structure to door area when you remove these panels, and only remove/replace one panel at a time to keep as straight as possible.

Spend extra money and buy the best spot weld cutter blades you can get. You will wear our 4 or 5 of them. Also critical to have a fairly good wire feed welder.

General rule for floor replacement:
a) Second Bugeye you do will take less that half the time, and
b) After you have done one floor replacement, you'll spend more $$ on the next BE so you won't have to do it again.
c) You'll be proud of the work when it is done.

Have fun! Blueghost
