float chamber setting

Just to clarify something I read in several manuals, does one hold down the lever (fork looking thing) that pushes on the needle valve to close it when adjusting the clearence? Also I have seen three different settings. What is the correct one for an HD8 (BJ8)? Thanks as always.

If the carb has the original type float needle with a small spring loaded plunger in the center, the fork should be just touching the plunger but not compressing the spring.

For 2 1/4" & 1 7/8" OD float chambers, a 7/16" drill bit should just slide under the curved portion of the fork arms. For 3" OD chambers use a 5/8" drill. If you have some type of non spring plunger valve set it with the arm just touching the valve.

Thanks, Dave. The instructions say with the "with the needle valve closed" which I inturputed as pushing on the fork to close it. I have seen 7/16, 3/8 and 5/16. My concern was the "closed" part. Again, thanks.
