We went down to the post office today to pick up the mail & the flags in the village were at half mast. Always a bad sign. When we returned home I checked the OIF web sites to see if we'd lost any more kids over there and there were none obviously from the state.

It wasn't until a half hour ago that she remembered why they'd be flown low today. (I hadn't) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/patriot.gif
 
Pearl Harbor? I noticed them at half mast at a couple churches today too.
 
Yes it was 65 years ago,and the survivors were remembering their comrades at Pear Harbour today.
I have only just taken our flags down.Always put em up on special occasions. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/patriot.gif

Understandable, but still sad.
Hat is off, moment of silence... Thank you men, and women, who were part of that horrible day. We owe more than we may ever know to them.
 
Yeah, I was at a conferenrce in Philadelphia yesterday and I noticed quite a few flags at half-staff.

By the way, the teacher that went with me is a history buff (but works as a chemistry teacher). Since she would be away on Dec 7, she asked her Chem I class (45 students) if anyone knew what Dec 7 was?
No one knew. I fear my students would be similarly uninformed.

Also, the first plane to be engaged in combat on Dec 7 was an Aeronca 65T, just like mine. A student and instructor were out flying it when they ran into the first wave of Zeros. They got shot up, but landed safely. It's still on display at the Peal Harbor Museum.
There was a great story in the NY Times yesterday about the amazing re-building of the ships and harbor at Pearl Harbor. Most of us think of the loss of the Arizona, but there is a real, heroic story about the subsequent repairs...most of the ships were repaired quickly and went on to support the Pacific victory.

I hadn't heard that.

We have a special "Pearl Harbor Survivor" license plate in FL - and I've seen a handful around over the past couple of years.

NYS has one too.
(here's a 6th degree thing) My wifes, friends, grandfather was a pearl harbor survivor. He passed on last year. We went to his funeral and as I passed the casket I gave him a salute and said "thanks".
I remember seeing his specialty plate a few times around town.
