can you turn the rotor freely when its pulled up?

If you can get access to the single screw that holds the distributor housing to the block remove it and the whole thing should slide out as my money is on it being stuck inside that housing. Once its out you should be able to beat on it away from the car.

This is nothing that cant be solved with a BFH a sawzall and a screwdriver. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

Geez....I'm willing to bet that even jeff Schlemmer cannot fix that one!

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

Body is "potmetal"...Totally unforgiving of force from a BFH. Brittle as glass.

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

Ok, I am back, tools put away, hands cleaned up & I am eating dinner.

Here's what happened as the sun was getting low in the sky and the 30F out there in the sun was about to become 20F in the dark...

I got a prybar because it just wasn't going to come out otherwise. I put a hole lot of force on it with a big wrench next to the block both to protect the block and to give me just a bit more leverage.
I pulled & pushed the bar, moved the diz a little and pried it a bit more. It was coming, but slowly.
Finally gave it a major pull by standing on the other side of the car and leaning over the engine. Woosh!! It all came at once. Thanks for the heads up so I didn't land on my rear! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

With the sun just about to hit the top of the western hills I decided the Haynes manual that suggested a bit of vaseline on the shaft of the diz was probably a good idea and so I loobed it up.

It slid in, I lined it up (I had taken mental note of the location and orientation before removal).
I thought those bolts were a bugger to remove - reinstalling them was much worse! Just a box end / open end 7/16" wrench and my big hands now made bloody by all this scrambling.

It was dusk when I got the thing tightened up, so I hooked up all the wires and got in & turned the Key!! VROOM!!!

Timing was too far advanced, now that it was dark I just turned the A<->R dial towards R as far as it would go. I'll have to do some more fine tuning to the timing later.

It was running at 1500 rpm, so I turned down the idle to 750 & it ran just fine. I took it out for a spin, nice acceleration and hey - stepping on it in 3rd gear you really know it's got something going on under there!

So - Thanks for all the support, another job done and another car bringing it's driver more smiles per mile!

I even ran into another MG owner at the auto parts store.
He tried to guess the year of my car, he said "is it a 72?" I said, no but close - see the split bumper?
Ah - a 1970!!

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

Excellent, a prybar is a joy. Sometimes it is the only way.

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

Fighting *time* is worse than fighting any other thing I can think of. It mandates the end justify the means. Glad it worked out to the "VROOM!" post. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

Isn't this when someone says "next time, it will be easier" /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif LOL
OR "if you had started ealier, you wouldn't have to had hurry at the end" /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/hammer.gif LMAO

Congrats! Another job well done...or well, done! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

This case worked out to a good conclusion. More times than not it's: "The hurrier I go, the behinder I get."

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

I was prepared to leave it for another day and drive the Midget to work - but I really wanted to get it done.

As it was I put my tools away in the dark, even put a new plug on the end of the wire to the oil pressure unit by aid of flashlight. (I had broken that off during the "procedure")

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

Here's the report on how it went this morning:

Two things I noticed:
1. I didn't have to have the choke set as long as I used to before it would idle smoothly.

2. It surprised me in 4th gear on the freeway, I was just getting on and coming up to speed when I looked down and found it was running at 5K rpm.

It never did that before, it would struggle to get up to about 4700 in 4th gear.

A bit too fast to drive at 5AM - but still a pleasant surprise at how effortless it was!

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

Lovely, just lovely. And with a timeing tweaking it will even get better.

This from Jeff

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:]The distributor setup from the factory almost acted like a rev limiter by giving too much advance at the top end. Getting it "right" makes all the difference in the world in terms of actually being able to rev the engine![/QUOTE]

Rick
Super!! Glad to hear the results were good. I think I will give Jeff a call on Monday to discuss my original 25D.

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

Great - this car drives like a dream now, I am very happy.
going uphill it just continues accelerating up through 5K.
I have to back off due to excessive speed!
