I got a bit of sunshine today so I have the mounting plate disconnected and my old distributer pulled out 1/2 inch.
It stops there, won't pull out.
Any quick ideas?
I need to get this pulled & the new one from Jeff installed ASAP.

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

This th' MGB, Rick?

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

Yes it is the MGB, 1800 motor, 25D distributor.

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

Have you removed the two bolts on opposite sides of the clamp, or just slacked off the clamp bolt?

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

Yes, the whole clamp is free.
I followed the Haynes instructions, except that I also backed off the tightening bolt since the thing was being replaced.

The dist pulls out freely about 1/2 inch then stops. It will rotate freely, but not pull out.

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

Likely just the O-ring at the top of the bore. Caught on some "Schmaze". Grab it with both hands and YANK. Be cautious to have good footing... it MAY actually come out! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

Would spraying in there with some WD40 help? Hurt?

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

& iof it does, be prepared to fall backwards...just had a similar problem & ended up using a large screwdriver as leverage

but, here's the question: are you sure its free from camshaft gears?

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

It pulls freely about a half to 3/4 inch then just stops.
It rotates left & right freely too.
Think maybe some WD-40 in there might be helpful at this point. I'll take the laptop down to the car so I can continue watching for your thoughts & ideas.

Seems it should just have the same dog at the bottom, so if it pulls out then it should be free - right?

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

Yup. It's the O-ring being brittle and not getting past some built-up deposits. WD can't hurt, but if you've some PB Blaster to drizzle down around it, that'd be better. Push it back down a bit to get the stuff all around the bore, grab the dizzy body and twist (rotate) it back-and-forth as you pull.

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

can you turn the rotor freely when its pulled up?

If you can get access to the single screw that holds the distributor housing to the block remove it and the whole thing should slide out as my money is on it being stuck inside that housing. Once its out you should be able to beat on it away from the car.

This is nothing that cant be solved with a BFH a sawzall and a screwdriver. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

Noice, Stew... I think he needs more like a slurry of slippery stuff and some judiciously applied yankin'.

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

I have PB blaster here, I will use some now.
Yes, Stewart - it does turn freely.
Won't try the BFH untl last resort time.

It going to be cold tonight, gotta get this done while the sun is out or I will be driving the Midget to work tomorrow.

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

After you douse it with Blaster, work it up-and-down as you rotate the body of the dizzy, Rick.

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

I sure hope thats all it takes. Even after getting that distributor out of the block and soaking it in pb blaster then beating on it as hard as I could it never did come out and it's now landfill.

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

w00f!

I've had 'em "reluctant" but never THAT bad. Carb cleaner or paint thinner to melt the O-ring may be an idea, too... but "one step at a time" for this, methinks.

Re: Cross post- Distributor removal 'emergency'

tick-tick-tick-tick.....
