Fitting clutch slave

I just put my engine and new Datsun 5-speed into my Mk 2 Sprite. Now I find that I have a problem with installing the slave cylinder. The connection for the line to the m/c faces into the frame member and there is no room to connect the line to the slave. I bought a flex line from Paul A. when I bought his tranny and the double male connector for it also will not fit. It looks to me that the only solution will be to notch the frame member to create clearance. The notched area would then need to have a patch welded into place. I can't see any way that I could be placing the mounting for the slave any differently but clearly something is not right here. I was under the impression that the whole engine/tranny thing would just drop into place. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Which slave cylinder?

Is it possible to flip the cylinder?
Or... is it possible to switch the bleeder port and the line port?

Can you get a picture?

Can I ask another question?

Cylinder will only go in one way.

It can go two ways if using a bracket similar to the Rivergate kit.

I'm using the bracket that was supplied by Paul A. It appears that the slave needs to be tilted to allow the line to the m/c to be accessed. For that to happen, one side of the bracket would have to be shorter than the other or else the end away from the push rod would have to angled up. There is a notch in the backing plate and with the end of the slave held fully in the notch the clearance that I need is there. However, the bracket doesn't allow the slave to move up that far. I sure wish that Paul would still be available.

This is one of those times that I wish I had never started the restoration. At least all of the multitude of previous challenges have been solved.

Nelson -

Where in Ohio are you? I have a Bugeye with one of Paul's kits, but I will not be able to look at it or get pics for you until the weekend.

John,

I'm quite a distance away from you. I'm in Medina which is just south of Cleveland. Photos would be extremely helpful when you have the time. There are many other Sprite projects that I can work on until then.

Nelson -

I will get you some pics this weekend. Send me your email address.

I know the Medina area quite well. In fact, I was just up that way this past weekend. I am originally from the Youngstown/Warren area and I graduated from U of Akron Law School many years ago.

BTW, Are you an amateur radio operator? I was formerly WA8YWE.

John,

I've had my ham license since 1956. That is even longer ago than I bought my Sprite which was in 1962. My e-mail address has my call sign in it: k8djc at zoominternet.net. My wife is from the same area you came from - Howland.

That mounting for the slave has me completely baffled. I can't see what I am doing or have done wrong but I just can't get clearance for the line to attach.

Looking forward to seeing whatever pix you can get.

Nelson,
Sorry to hear on the cylinder fitment issues. I assume you are using the stock Sprite slave?
I thought I saw somewhere that a slave from a big healey was a possible solution for clearance issues (??) I might be way off base here.

With all the raves about Paul's kit, I'm thinking maybe something is just slightly amiss..or I would expect we would have heard of it by now. ("nice kit, but impossible to attach hydraulic hose to it!!")

I'm trying to order my kit right now..so please keep me posted. Have you called Paul? I haven't been able to get in touch him, not sure if he's on vacation or ? I hope for his health is OK.
He is usually responsive on e-mails..he helped me with picking the 5spd and walked me through all the (then) confusing 210 vs b210 etc.

Good luck and please let us know how it turns out.

Was Paul not seriously ill and only working a bit at the moment. I mean real ill.

When we were at the LOTO I heard that he is recovering very slowly and staying at his girlfriend's place. He was trying to spend one session of several hours a week at his shop. He still tired very quickly. We collected some funds to help him with some of his expenses. I haven't heard anything since I left Missouri.

Nelson -

I am down my shop and I will be sending you pix to your email address momentarily. If these pix do not help, I seem to recall that there is a gentleman by the first name Peter(last name is Schull or Shrull or something close to these names) whom I believe is a friend of Paul's and has been acting as a go-between during Paul's unavailability. Perhaps someone on the forum, or maybe Jim Johnson from LotO knows how to reach Peter.
