First time electrical check of BJ8 O.D.

I have started the engine and driven the car up and down the street a few times to check out the tranny. I have not addressed the O.D. Is there an additional article to the shop manual to help me check out the electrical parts of the O.D. I hope to finish the soft top installation today and the O.D. is next on my list. Thanks and have a good day!

Well you can turn the ignition and OD switches on, set the gear lever in neutral then move it to your right like you are going to shift into THIRD gear. :yesnod: Hear the clidk? the circuit is complete. Now turn off the OD switch and press the throttle hear it click again ? just droped out. Next step Go see if it works.--Keoke

P. S. You might want to disconnect the coil while you be playing around here.= :laugh:
 
Keoke wrote the basics (I think he meant shifting into 3rd gear when he said to move the lever to the right). More detail is available in Norman Nock's Tech Tips book available from British Car Specialists if things don't work correctly.
 
Don't know about the center shifters (or the BN1), but on the side shift gearbox you don't need to slip it into the 3rd or 4th gear position to activate the OD solenoid. As pointed out above, the OD switch on the gearbox is closed when the shift lever is pushed to the right (or pulled to the right if you have a RH drive car)and need not be actually put in gear. You should be able to move the shift lever side to side to hear the solenoid clicking in and out.

I got the solonoid to energize as you suggested but upon turning off the OD switch and pressing the throttle I did not hear the solonoid click. I have the tranny tunnel off so it is easy to hear the solonoid. I adjusted the throttle switch as the manual suggested and at about 1/5 throttle the throttle switch closes. Is there a great danger in operating the OD if the throttle switch is not adjusted correctly? Thanks and have a good day!

Hi If you check with a light tester or volt meter at the OD switch terminal by the gear lever and make sure the power to the solenoid goes away when you depress the throttle you will be OK. It is possible that she drop out of the solenoid is not as loud as the pick up . This is because there is a rubber pad which can cushion the solenoid's armature when it drops out.
