First Post [and front splash panel Q]

Hi all! I'm just getting back into the whole classic car thing after an 8 year absence. Nowadays there are forums for our obsessions!

I have just purchased a tidy '70 BGT, but need to replace the broken aerial/antenna. It's mounted on the front right fender, behind the splash panel. The trouble is, despite removing the bolts behind the front wheel in the arch, the panel seems riveted in place. The car had a full bare-metal resto 7 years ago, so I'm hoping I can get into this compartment without serious metalwork!

Is there something I'm missing here? Any pictures of exactly how this panel is supposed to come off?

Thanks in advance!

I need to replace

Hi Sultanoswing, Do not know anything about that panel. However, most antennas that are mounted on the wing in that position are removeable from the out side no reason to get inside the panel.Being very careful with the remaining antenna bit unscrew the nut on the top holding the bit firmly in your fingers. Coax the nut up the shaft and off.Remove the chrome cover and coax it off. Remove the slotted insulator and coax it and its rubber off.Underneath the wing and attached to the antenna body there should be a metal piece that bridges the hole in the wing, this piece now will tilt out of the way so that it passes through the hole in the wing.Maybe the antenna cable is removable from the antenna base and maybe not. If not a complete new unit will have to be threaded into the cockpit area.Reinstalling the antenna into the wing is the reverse of its removal.---Fwiw--- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif Keoke-

It should just come off when you undo the bolts. On some cars the seal is held into place with brads or pop rivits, but that shouldn't stop it from coming out.

Thanks for the tips - I'll check it out the next time we get a fine day here and let you know how it went /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

@ Guinn: LOL!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The reason I have to do work on a fine day is I don't have a garage!

I got the panel off OK and successfully changed the antenna out.
