MGB First Drive--'69 MGB

Drove my "new" '69 MGB on the road yesterday for the first time (legally).
And drove it another 20 miles today.
Ran great, even in some unexpected bumper-to-bumper traffic.

I put new rings and rod bearings in it last month just as a precaution. Also ground the valves (but they would have been OK as-is). Cleaned up the pistons and the inside of the engine and oil pan (lots of sludge), but basically all looked good (it has about 70,000 miles on it). One lifter had a noticable wear mark and two others had minor wear, so it got new lifters too. The cam looked fine, so I left that for now.

I painted the wire wheels (Rustoleum flat aluminum colour). I still need to do a few touch up on the body...no rust but a few scratches. The seats were re-done, but the rugs are awful. I'll probably pull the seats and rip out the rugs. Then wire brush the floors (and the trunk floor) and repaint. And then decide if it really needs rugs (or maybe just rubber floor mats). The top is crusty but good enough...it has a pefect tonneau cover

Still needs shock oil (at very least) and the rear springs are too high (maybe they were intended for a RB car). I'll figure out a way to lower them later. Front wheel bearings are OK and there's no play in the front end anywhere..

Has a slight oil leak on the front tappet cover (even with the "good" silicone gaskets). Needs valve adjustment and head re-torqued. And I haven't checked the timing. My fuel pump leak has gone away (!?!?), but I'm sure it'll come back. I have a new fuel pump and hose to go in soon.
One of my new tires/tubes is losing air....I think the old tubes that it came with looked to be better made (the Michelin X tires it came with actually looked almost new, but they were 20 years old, so I pitched them .

Shifter is pretty notchy yet but I still need to change the trans oil (and diff oil). Maybe that'll help.
I put new front brake pads in it yesterday (plus one new hard line). One caliper piston was sticky but I got it out and freed it up...it seems OK now. I have new shoes for the rear too, but haven't put them in yet.

It has a great exhaust sound and the giant, skinny "banjo" steering wheel is neat. Overall, it's fun to drive and a real "keeper" (but it's definetely "old school" compared to my Miata).

Nice. You kept the original 1969-only side reflectors & 1069-only head restraints. My compliments, don't see many 1969s so equipped these days. Thank you for preservering that.

Very nice, Nial! If ya keep ahead of th' rust mites the thing should be about bulletproof. All the other things are just maintenance. Great find.

That's the kind of LBC that I categorize as an "exciting" find. Needs just a little TLC to be a winner. Usually, the TLC stuff you mentioned is lots of fun to me: wire wheeling, light touch-up painting; minor engine work, etc.

Lucky guy! Keep us posted.
