Firefox, Safari, Camino

If those three words mean computer stuff to you ... read on.

I'd been using Firefox (latest version) as my Mac browser for years. Noticed that most website pages were taking longer and longer to finish loading on my screen. Especially BCF! Would take up to a minute to reload all the thread headings on the Triumph Forum homepage.

Before tossing my trusty ol' 500MHz iBook OSX.3.9 into the bin, I cranked up my old version (1.3.2) of Safari.

Every single website I visited loaded at least 3 times faster than Firefox. That's with the default settings for Firefox, and for Safari.

Using Safari, the BCF Triumph Forum page loads in four seconds, as opposed to 60 seconds with Firefox.

Also tried same with Camino, which loaded in about 10 seconds. Amazing how much slower Firefox is. And don't even ask about Internet Explorer. That would take well over a minute for the same page, and give two or three "popup warnings" which needed to be OKd before the page would finish loading.

As an aside, I'm listening to Linda Ronstadt's album "Canciones de mi Padre". What a *great* album - and sultry voice!

Interesting. FF on my lowly PC loads that forum almost instantly. IE7 is at most 2 seconds. Neither give any popups.

Change your settings! Cache clear at every shutdown, pop-up blocker on, cookies from originating site only, clear on shutdown.

FF here on every machine (Linux, Win2K, XP Pro) loads in an eyeblink most times. Even on a lowly Panasonic Toughbook with a P-II, wireless!

mebbe it's a MAC thing? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

I'm a Mac guy, and use Safari most of the time (OSX 10.4). It's pleasantly snappy, and compares to IE7 under XP.

I'm on an Intel Macbook, which is a big speed increase over the older iBooks.

"mebbe it's a MAC thing?"

might be - but more likely it's my 500MHz processor compared to the 2.8GHz processors on modern 'puters.

As I'd rather just use a faster browser than lay out $1500 for a new breakfast table laptop, I'm amazed at the speed difference of those three browsers. If I leave Firefox running, then go to BCF/Triumph, and click Tinster's voltage stabilizer thread ("all"), it takes 30 seconds to load that thread. Go to another thread, then return to Tinster's, still takes 30 seconds to laod. But Safari takes only 3 seconds to load the exact same info (graphics, text, links, etc.). Weird.

Running FF or IE on XP loads BCF PDQ for me. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Your problem might be the old Mac not liking the newer browsers.

F.F. Ver. 1.0, win 98 se, athalon 2,800 C.P.U., 256 M.B. ram, Comcast cable connection, Wireless router, {this pc is hard wired into the router.}
History set to 0
saved info, unchecked
saved passwords, unchecked
download manager, remove files from download manager. upon sucessful download.
Cookies, Only checked if I need to log into a website {email and B.C.F. login} otherwise ALWAYS unchecked.
cashe, 0 K.B. of diskspace.
Popup blocker on.
It hauls A&& {the browser NOT the machine itself}
it`s only slow if there is a web problem {server or the like} OR IF the kids have thier P.C. downloading something.
Had one problem in the past with SLOWWWWWWWW, come to find out the router wasn`t secure {the kids set it up} someone in the neighborhood was using our bandwidth!
Sence I fixed that, NO problems {other than the kids and thier constant downloading}
Normally everything I click on internet wise, loads instantly!
And YES this P.C. I built out of discarded parts.
You would laugh you head off if you could see it!
BUT it WORKS *SMILE*

Yep, It has a P.C.I. Ide card and four hard drives plus a cable {the one you see hanging out of the case} to connect two more IDE devices. {My music drive and another cd writer.}

Win98SE?? 256Meg? Hauls A$$??

I think you need a better benchmark :smile: Speed aside, that OS lineage has way too many security holes in it to be used today.

Just converted from Windoze to an iMac and I'll never go back... I bought the cheap one and it's still awesome... iMac 2.0GHz, 2GB, Leopard comes out today woohoo!

I used to be a Windows zealot - I cut my teeth writing client/server apps for Windows 3.1 (back in the C/SDK/Sybase days). Actually have a "degree" somewhere from Microsoft University in Redmond (as they called it in those days). Met Steve Balmer on the campus about 10 years ago.

Hahahah the only benchmark I have {or ever had} is my eyes.
As Nano seconds are unimportant to me.
As far as windoez goes {Not very far in my book} it is all my redneck brain wants to do to learn an O.P. sys. {a windoze zealot I am NOT!
As far as securuty goes, Nothing here worth spending your time to hack {you`d be highly dissapointed}.
I`v spent a lot of time FIXING the new fangled computers and O.P sys`s my kids have. As for me, NO THANX
As I stated, I built this machine out of junk Parts, it does what I want, when I want, and goes PLENTY fast for what I do on it.
And besides I can {and have many many times} reformated and reinstalled faster than I can figure out what a problem is and fix it. {not worth my time to sit here and wonder whats going on and how to cure the illness}

The issue was browser opening time, and mine goes lickedy split, all I can ask for.
My point was NOT to say I had the biggest, fastest, most secure machine, but instead, to say that even an old minimal machine can be suitable and reasonably fast for browsing the net.
One question, who would want to hack a win98 machine when there are SOOOOOOOOO many other greener grapes on the vine?
Oh B.T.W. the reason my drives are hanging out in the air is so I can {And do} unplug them when not in use. My master hard drive ONLY has the O.P. sys and F.F. on it and absolutely NOTHING else. And I do have a backup drive. if the current master goes down I unplug it, plug in the backup and i`m back online in minutes if need be.
To each his/her own!

Have to agree with Doc. If I don't clear cache, and occasionally delete the temp and history log files IE7 seems to overload the system and not allow fast access to BCF. Sometimes I have to delete all my cookies and start over as well. Not knowing diddly about it I asked Basil and he mentioned something about IE7, Norton, cookies, and clearing cache so that's what I do occasionally when things slooooooow dowwwwn. Oh, don't forget your password and username you'll need it to get back on.

Shrugs, Internet Explorer! am I ever glad I don`t have to use it!
I rendered the bugger inoperable in my win98. {don`t try that tactic with Xp tho you won`t like the results!}

Cookies, Isn`t that the little round thingies you dunk in milk before you eat them?

History, they tried to teach me that in school but seemed insignificant to me as some of it has been proven to be incorrect. {Not to sure about the rest of it either.}

Cashe, I keep that in my pocket. Unless i`m spending it on L.B.C. parts. {L.B.C. parts can clear your cashe in a hurry as most of us know} /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/lol.gif

My VERY dry sense of humor coming out again.
