I recently sent my sister a nicely matted and framed picture of the night sky that I took recently at Gran Quivira Mission. I packed it as carefully as I could with foam and bubble wrap and extra layers of cardboard to protect it from damage.

Well, when my sister picked it up from the post office yesterday, the guy handed it to her and said: "You're probably going to need to file a claim for this." Here's what it looked like when she got it. She could hear glass rattling around. The picture itself was badly damaged as were the frame and matting.

I see the problem. Decades of this, USPS and UPS...even FedEx.

You have "fragile" stamps on the package.

That is a red flag (notice "fragile" is in red) to the paycheck earners en-route to play football, frisbee off the roof, drop from 4th floor window.
Seen it a lot.
NEVER have a "fragile" stamp or sticker on any package that leaves here.

As much as I hate to think that there are people that low, I hate to admit that it's not out of the realm of possibility. Luckily I had it fully insured.

And the USPS rates keep going up and up! The service keeps going down. The package handlers must be idiots with no concern for others property. :rolleyes2: . Amazon hires the same class of people to package their products also. PJ

I would not blame this on the workers. There is probably a sign in the sort facility noting how many packages were handled the previous shift, there is the mid management bunch running around with stopwatches. It is a corporate calculation, get the packages sorted as quickly as possible and if there are a few claims, pay them.

Over the years, most of the packages I have sent and have received had done well, but one mailed to our son of his personal videos and notebooks was lost by the USPS somewhere around New Jersey, where the last scan showed up. It may have departed and headed towards New Mexico from there, but the tracking number never reappeared anywhere. None of it could be replaced. Luckily he is not one who is into keeping things, so he took it better than his mom.

I have no idea who to blame other than the USPS. I have no insight into how the damage occurred or when/where.

I once shipped a $500 piece of equipment that I sold on eBay. I made a plywood box and anchored it down. I shipped it FedEx and it arrived busted up. Thankfully I insured it for the full amount. It took a while to get paid and I refunded the buyer.

I was wondering how that pic appeared so big. I attached it from my iPhone and it usually appears small.

When you first upload a picture it will show as a thumbnail. Double click the thumbnail and a popup appears that allows you to "Center" and "Make Larger" (Not sure how easy it is to do on an iPhone though)

I have never been able to accomplish enlarging a pic from my iPhone. It’s no problem with a laptop.

I worked near a FedEx facility. One night we heard yelling, looked out back and the crew was playing bowling on the rollers with the packages. I work PO for 20 yrs, packages are thrown into hampers and more on top until that carriers hamper is full or done. Breakage occurs, but most of our breakage was from the main distribution center. Always insure anything deemed valuable. I order a DVD and the PO delivered it with a boot mark on it and broke. Ordered next day same DVD from UPS, not broke.

received last fall a large envelope from my local post office, inside it was the bottom half of the back of a catalog with the address on it. And a note stating that they wanted to show me they cared by delivering this damaged article. If course the rest of the catalog, for whatever it was, wasn't in the envelope just the part with my address. That I would have assumed they'd throw away and I would never have known or cared rather than package and deliver a completely useless piece of one page...
