I am finally getting ready to start reassembly. What was going to be a quick rebuild turned into a much larger project. The more I looked at the condition of the engine bay it just did not make any sense to not clean and protect what is a car still in pretty solid condition. It is not intended and not going to be a show car. But it will make a nice 20 footer and fun driver.

Shortly after the decision to clean and paint the bay.

Triumph that was missing an engine? Bummer, I know how you
feel.

Did you perform the paint job yourself or contract it out?
If by your hand, what specific metal wash, primer paint and
final coat(s?) paints did you use? Did you finish it off
with a clear coat? Any hand wet sanding involved?
Any brush work involved?

The reason I ask is because someone removed my fuel tank
and my trunk area looks pretty shabby. I might as well strip
it and paint it while I'm waiting for Crypty repair parts to
arrive.

Again.... fantastic looking engine compartment.

Looks just perfect Tom. I wish I had had mine out like you when I did it, but now I'll have to do the frame the hard way with the engine in the way.
 
Thanks for the nice comments, helps make me feel better about the decision to do the extra instead of being able to drive it sooner.

A very good friend, Al Hickey, has a shop about a 100 miles from me. I once worked in a shop for his dad, Dennis. When they found out I was thinking about doing the bay I was told they were going to do it for me. Dennis came down and picked it up with a car hauler. Al had one of his restoration specialists do the work and Dennis delivered it back. I could tell what it cost me, but that would not be much help to figure what a job like that would actually cost. I was told I had done so much for them that I should just not worry about it. As far as to how they did the job, with their reputation I did not even ask. I do know they used Sikkens base/clear and that when they do bays they use 80%gloss clear with 20% semi-gloss clear to very slightly cut the shine. They have feel it looks better if the bay is that little bit subdued compared to the exterior.

I did brush paint the frame because it would have been a nightmare to mask it off for overspray. Although I did use a spray can to get a few hard to reach corners.

The frame had no rust and there was very little on the front pan (or whatever it is called). I used Rustoleum red primer and black semi-gloss on the frame. And, Dale, just so you could give me a hard time /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif , I used Xylol to clean the frame.

I used a quart of Xylol just this morning
cleaning up Crypty's fuel tank.

Yes, I looked at your second picture and thought, yes that cleaned up pretty good for a driver. Then I went on the rest and thinking, he must drive some really nice places. Great work. I have been stipping away to bare metal and it does get weary. Good motivation to see your sucess. Thanks
