After a lot of going to local dealers and scouring craigslist I finally bought a car for my son. I wanted something that would be dependable and while cosmetics concerns were secondary, we wanted a car that was not totally trashed.
My budget topped at three grand. I looked at a lot of dogs, just because it says Honda or Toyota on it doesn't mean it is a good car.
A lot of people seem to view what could be perfectly good cars for a couple hundred thousand miles or more with a little maintainance instead see them as throw aways and drive them into the ground.
More amazing to me are dealers who buy such cars and don't even bother vacuuming them out or even cleaning the previous owners junk out of the trunk, while they mostly sit around for a lot of the day waiting for someone to come in and buy their "treasures".
Enough of the negative, Subie is a 96 Impreza, timing belt and water pump recently replaced, 168,000 miles. Starts easy, idles smooth, stops straight, no nasty knocks or rattles in the drivetrain or suspension, interior looks better than many cars I looked at with half the miles.
A five speed, my son wanted an automatic, but I told him he would soon be shifting as intuitively as he pushs the buttons on his x box controller. I think this has the potential for 250,000 miles at least.
Was a nice father son moment when I showed it to him and going for a drive, my parents never bought me a car, jr. will be responsible for gas and insurance so I am not letting him off too easy.
