I recently bought the wife a new iMac and now have her old PC set up out here in the garage with a wireless! Now I can get some work done on the EType and the Spitfire and still keep an eye on the forum!

It's one of the first "luxuries" I indulged in years ago. Gotta have SOME kinda garage connectivity! Ya got yerself a GPU!!!!

...now get to work. I just de-rusted the right side spring platform and lower A-arms onna B suspension. Painted up the A-arm and all the fasteners. Got dark so had to close down and grill up some pork fer din-din. T'morrow is for final disassemble of th' trunion and yank off the left side stuff to do the same.

Now you just need a 40" screen so you can see us trouble makers all the way from your engine compartment.

Fixed for accuracy :jester:

I'm currently remodeling the house, with a lot of walls torn out. I've wired every room, including basement workbench and garage with CAT6 enhanced wiring and have it all running through a Gigabit router and 16 port switch. Wireless would have been easier, but while I was in there.............does that sound familiar?

Oh yeah, my wife told me today that she wants an i-Pod, so I guess I'll be using one of my old computers for a media server.

NO foolish move, Paul!! I have a 24 port panel and a 24 port switch here. All rooms hard wired with at least two drops. I did all th' cable rat stuff over two years ago. Overkill? feh. It'll be a selling feature for th' place when it goes on th' block. Only home in the subdivision *properly* wired for the 21st century.

A funny: I had Verizon FiOS installer put the new stuff all in one place, had a drop right at the spot for the modem. Told him this would be his easiest install. He asked where that blue cable went, so I show'd 'im. Racked panel, switch, the firewall box and three machines in one room. Workstations in the others... he shook his head and said something like: "I don't know anything about this network stuff. Wow."

As soon as the modem was up, I stuffed a dedicated run into the thing and had connectivity thru the firewall box on all the workstations. He tried to shove the "value added" warez onto a Linux machine from a thumb drive... no joy. I asked for the default username/password of the modem and told him I'd be fine from there. Whole deal took under an hour. It amused me.

I cut the WiFi OFF at the modem. Have a separate Linksys WiFi router INSIDE the firewall I can turn on and off when I want. Hammock in th' backyard jungle, a CAB and a laptop. Life is GOOD.

Doc,

We're on the same page. I have added drops to every room and three to my office. I switched to D-Link Gamer Router and 16 port matching switch. I have the wi-fi off at the router (modem is just a high speed modem) and the router firewall is on. Very strong security and flexibility in controlling access, which is why I like their Gamer series. I used two (2) Leviton 12 port termination blocks (simply for size instead of their 24 which was extra long) to bring it all together at the panel and then sent them off through the switch with 12" 550 MHZ patch cables to each drop. I also ran three to the entertainment center for future streaming video and direct internet connect to the TV. One will go to a Niles audio controller that will tie in everything.

I also ran CAT6 to boxes in every room that I'm putting speakers in, along with shielded speaker wire into each box. Then I can start with a volume switch and later upgrade to a digital control center for each room with Meta data on the screen and total visual use of a drop in i-Pod or media server, along with every other audio unit, including the DVD player and cable TV for selected music channels.

Needless to say, the average cable guy isn't getting anywhere near these wires.

I did also add a complete home run of RG6 for the modem and had several run into the attic as extras for an FM antenna and HDTV antenna, in the event the cable ever goes out.

I'm now considering the HDTV antenna and FM thing. I could chop the overhead by dropping the TV stuff piped in over fiber. We don't watch enuff of the drivel to justify it anyhow. PBS would be just fine by me.

The hovel is SMALL so ferretin' about in th' attic is no issue.

So anyone drivin' down your street with a laptop and a Pringles can antenna can get into yer junk?

You guys freak me out.
I'm struggling to drag myself into the 20th Century with my first DVD player bought last week and you guys have your whole houses wired with enough heavy duty cable to encircle the globe.

I think I'll just sit down and try to work out how to wire my DVD into my TV via the beer fridge. :thirsty:

Beers!

Well, I'm happy to announce that I spent almost the entire day in the garage working on the Spitfire AND the Jag!

umm...just th' opposite. All the neighbors are better targets than me. No broadcasting SID here, all WEP'd up. Only working when I want it. All good. Half th' time I just hook up to one of the signals in range still runnin' default settings anyhow!

I figured you had it set up right, just sounded weird. Kinda like having the back door of the castle open for the Farmer's Market with a siege goin' on out front. :jester:

Having the computer hookup in your garage is a must for a tech guy like you, Basil. You're gonna love it!

Me, I'd just get grease and gook in the keyboard and ruin it in a few days.

In my new garage, just give me an AM/FM radio and a small fridge for "essential" refreshments and I'll be just fine. :yesnod:

Streaming video directly into computer, upload tuning sessions to you tube.

Lights....camera.......action...............

No Frank, those would probably get me shot by my wife, so I opted for standard white and beige molded plastic covers, BUT.........I have bright "red" 12" feeder cables from the terminator block to the switch. Just to spice it up a little.

It kind of looks like a coil pack for a V-12 with red wiring.
