Finally back to it

It has been too long since I did any work on my EType, but now I am finally back to it! I have made a commitment that as long as I am home, I am going to do something every day on my EType. Over the past few years I have gotten the car bead stripped and re-painted in original Silver-Blue and I have both the front suspension and the rear IRS rebuilt and detailed. I also have all the new wiring installed. That's where it’s been for quite some time.

Now, after sitting for several months, I am finally back to work on it! So farm I have cleaned, re-greased and installed the hand brake cable, and send of some chrome bits to be re-chromed. I also have sent the brake vacuum servo and a few other bits to be plated. Lat night I tore apart the heater motor to clean and detail it before I re-install in the heater box (which has been powder coated gloss black). I'll post some pictures maybe this week end. <span style='font-size: 14pt'>I plan to do something </span>- even if it’s small - <span style='font-size: 14pt'>every day from now on! </span> I'm tired of looking at it in my garage! <span style="color: #6600cc"><span style='font-size: 14pt'>It's time to get it back on the road!</span></span>

Thats the way Basil. I bought a 69 roadster last summer, I have purposely stayed away from it until I finish a couple of the other projects I have are done. A little time everyday adds up quicker that you think. I have been enjoying driving the 68 so it makes me want to start the 69.

Tonight I worked on the fuel pump and the heater motor. The fuel pump is now completely disassembled & ready for rebuild...going to order the kit tomorrow. I took the heater motor apart tonight also and cleaned and painted it and put it back together. Brushes and bushings were fine. The heater box had been previously powder coated and so tomorrow I hope to put the heater all back together again and re-install on the firewall. Tonight I managed to get the heater box motor rebuilt and all put back together and it is now re-mounted on the heater box. I also rivited the original metal "CAUTION NEGATIVE EARTH" sign onto the heater box. I thought about buying a new one but my original, while not perfect, was still in pretty good shape. Today I should get my brake servo bellows housing (the big pan-like thing that provides vac assist to teh brakes) back from the plating shop where I had it re-plated in zinc (it was originally cad plated, but not many places do that these days and the zinc will give it a very similar look to original). Then tonight I should be able to get my master cyls and assist servo back on the car!

My 1950 Daimler is POs Earth, as was the 54 XK120 I used to own.

You know, the guys that were making positive grounds would have initialized the drawning of transisters with the arrows pointing the right way, the way current flows, instead of the reverse.

Ok, spent the better part of the day in the garage and managed to finish the heater box restoration and install, and also the brake master cyl and the servo and slave cyl rebuils and install. Here is a picture of the work in this general area today (Attached) -- Basil


(Note the restored pedal boxes and the servo bellows can which was re-plated this week).

Today my fuel pump rebuild kit arrived, along with 8 ft of fuel line for the EType and a few other bits including a 4.2 Litre EType Parts Book (Identifies every nut and bolt!)

So tonight I got the fuel pump nearly rebuilt, but its after midnight and I have to get to bed. Tomorrow I'll just need to mate the two halves of the pump together and mount it in the right-rear wing. Then I'll also install the new fuel lines in the boot.

Little bit closer!

PS: That EType fuel pump was a beast to rebuild! It seems like it has 8000 parts! (I know it doesn't but it seems that way)

Tonight I finished the rebuild/restoration of my EType's fuel pump. Before and after pics attached. Now all I have to do is figure out how in the name of all that is h oly do I get the new fuel line onto the banjo unions!

Cut the old line off the banjo bolts and drill out the hole to fit the new line. Silver solder or braze the new line to the bolt.

Tonight (1 June 07) I got the fuel lines in the back of the boot (one from pump to bulkhead and the other from pump-to-fuel tank) on slicker that anything. I called XKs Unlimited where I bought the line, and asked them how they do it, and I posted a thread in the Restoration Forum on the detailed procedures(involves hot olive oil).

I'm sure other methods would work, but this was very easy and did not molest the line in any way.
