OK, I've got everything I need to replace my (MGB's) boots, but before I get started I need to have a question answered...

How on earth are those boots filled with oil when they are installed? I cannot see anything on the boots or rack that looks like a place to fill 'em up!

Any suggestions?

Hi Obtong - I tackled this one last winter myself. First - put the front end up on jack stands. Then, right where the steering shaft from steering wheel enters rack, there is a plate held on with 2 bolts. clean this area thoroughly with parts cleaner, then remove bolts. beneath the plate are several shims - fragile, take care with these. Then there is a spring and a copper? piece that comes out. Get a quart of 90w differential grease - the kind with a top that you slice off the tip. You can then squeeze the gear oil into the rack SLOWLY as it takes a while for it to seep in. I was able to do this from beneath, just enough room between rack and radiator to allow the tapered cap of the gear oil container to enter the opening in rack. squeeze some in, let it settle, repeat until the rack is full. reinstall parts and you're good to go.

one more thing - you dont actually put the gear oil in the boots - given time - it'll get there all by itself!
 
Thanks for the help! It was actually quite easy to get the plate off and to fill the steering rack. I used one of those push down pumps. I managed to get about a pint of gear oil in. Does that sound about right?

FWIW the spring and copper bits are the steering damper.

I've read a few things about jacking one side of the car up then filling through one of the boots, but doing it through the damper seems a little more straight forward.
 
Obtong - that sounds about right. I think thats what mine took, if i remember right.
