Would anyone here be nervous using these copper figure 8 gaskets. They are straight, not bent, never used, but they are ten years old and are showing tarnish. Not sure what that means, or if relevant. FYI, I have new steel ones as well. Thoughts?

I like the copper. I believe copper was used originally and plus they came with a plastic coating of some kind over that. With these cars getting older, I would consider the main concern on figure 8 gaskets is how they sit in the block. I have seen engines where the pitting inside the block had almost been destroyed the flat surface were the figure 8 rests. The Wellseal stuff might seal the area where the flat part is almost nil if that is the case. However, someone has probably figured out something for that problem.

Figure of Eight

I used Aviation Form-A-Gasket No 3 on the advice of someone we all knew.

Have you already banged out the old liners? If not, I've got a tool made for that task.

I made a similar tool a while ago, and, while purchasing the parts at the local hardware store, the clerk thoughtfully asked if I was making a pipe bomb. I told him no, because if I were making an explosive device, I wouldn't be paying extra for the brass end caps!

I’m OK for now. I just rapped a 16 inch 1X 2 up there. The risk is getting wood debris near the bearings but I was careful.

You were lucky. When they get stuck they can get really stuck.
