TR4/4A Fender vents on a TR4?

Anyone heard of fender vents on a TR4 to keep under hood temperatures down? I'm assuming they are cut outs on the inner fender wells?Anyone have a pic?
 
Are you thinking of the Duct and Grill Kit as originally seen on the TR4 Works rally cars?

They aren't cheap and require some expert fab to get them in. Love to have a set on my 4A though. But baby blue isn't for me, Maybe black. Yeah baby!
 
Yeah, I gave those some consideration too a while back, even squirreled away the vent pieces from a Herald grill. But I looked over 4VC as well as another clone rally car and the body work put me off. Doable, but not for the amateur (me anyway).
 
I put some vents in a A/H3000 a couple of years ago. They looked good. As valuable as TR4 fenders are, I would be hesitant to do it.

We have a local TR6 owner who has added a set of stick-on vents to the wings of his 6.

Stick-on... Yikes! I've see the car regularly but alas no photo as looking at it is like a seeing a wreck on the highway -- you want to do something... can't just turn away... but a photo is inappropriate.

Needless to say he takes some ribbing on this subject.

Some, but not really since you are venting to a pretty enclosed space. Would also result in hot air that once cooled will result in condensation in a place where our TRs like to rot anyway.

Additionally, you'll be venting to an area where hot and dirty air could get into the cockpit. Probably non-ideal as well...

They're hinged to open inward and stay either fully open or closed.

Over the last 20 years I went from a TR4a to Sprite to a Healey 100 to a MGB to a TR250. The TRs with their relatively big open engine compartments ventilate the hot air out a lot better than the Healeys and the MG. I guess what I am saying is I don't think they are needed for a stock or lightly modified 4 in fine fettle.

But they sure do look cool!
 
If you want to see a picture of a really wonderful TR with very smart side vents go to www.enginuity.co.uk and look at the green TR5 that enginuity have sorted out for the two owners.
I am new to this forum and I dont know if this constitutes advertising as enginuity is where I take my car to be serviced and I use the green car as a yard stick.

They also have some interesting solutions to make the drivers seat move back a further 3 inches for the taller driver.
They repositioned my petrol pump so that it no longer overheats and cuts out at high speed on hot days. Very annoying to lose all power while you are overtaking large lorries at speed.

As most of this forum's readers are LHD rather than RHD I hope my plug for enginuity will not get me kicked off the forum as it is a long way from the states to enginuity's work shop in London.

I forgot to point out that if you go onto the enginuity website ....have aa look at sample work where they have pictures and a nice story of the restoration that they did on the green TR5.
They have a great shot of the vents and explain why they put them in (for a cooler eengine compartment)
The engine that they have installed is quite potent with six pots as a TR5 has on this side of the Atlantic.

The wheels on the green TR5 from enginuity are wolfrace wheels. They were quite common in the 70's (I had them on a Datsun 240Z to my great shame)
They were one of the first type of alloy wheels available.

I think they should be easy to obtain even today.
I dont know the size of the tyres on the green Tr5 but I will post something after I have a look at mine which are actually wider.
I have wire wheels (chrome) on my TR5 with a hexagonal spinner. The wheels are very wide and slightly proud of the body but you could order that size when buying the cars in 1968 therefore although certainly not standard they were a Triumph option. The wheels I have are tubless therefore they are actually after market wheels fitted in the last decade.

By the way I googled wolfrace and they have a 40th anyversary edition of wheel that looks very much like the slot wheels you liked... go to wolfrace web site and look for 40yh anyversary and you will see that wolfrace has been making alloys since 1971 and the latest model is based on the slot version that did so well in the 70's
