Fanbelt and Ignition Leads

I'm replacing the fanbelt in my GT, but am having a devil of a job getting the new one on. The alternator is loosened to the max, but I can't quite get the belt over the pulley with my fingers. I'm afraid to lever it on in case I damage the edge of the pulley. Anybody have any tips?

I need to replace the ignition leads. One of the plug leads is longer and a different type to the others! Can I just go down to PepBoys and get a new set off the rack, or are these special leads in any way?

Thanks, as always, for advice

Have ya got the "old" belt yet? If so the local parts-monkey can measure one against the other. If not, tell him you need a belt 1/2" bigger circumference than the one you have. The wires may be "in stock" by application (but I doubt it). If not, you MAY be able to get a length of wire and a four cylinder "kit" to make up your own. My preference is for COPPER wire, but you may not find it easily. NAPA does carry it.

BTDT, the new Moss fan belts are too short. Last one I bought locally was 11mmx915mm (10.5 width is fine too). Plus or minus 10mm should be fine on length.

Will someone please tell Moss that their belts are crap?
{edit: perhaps I just got a bad one? It is a few years old}

Thanks Doc and others.

In the end I removed the two top bolts on the alternator. That allowed me to angle the unit towards the engine a little, and then I was able to slip the belt over the pulley.

Now it's on, it seems a good fit: the adjustment bolt is in the middle of the guide slot.

Kragen had no suitable ignition leads. I guess I need to order some online.

The belts are always tight! You have to sort of get them half on, then turn the alternator pulley while pushing on the belt with a manly thumb, and it'll pop on. But don't run them too tight, or your alternator won't last long...

VERY true! NO three foot crowbar as a tensioning tool!

Welcome to the mayhem, rhoamish!

I just installed a new Moss belt y'day...did it all by hand - fit great & tightened it to 1/2" deflection by just pulling up on bottom of alternator.

Yes, mine was a Moss belt too. Deflection and fit is good, but I did have trouble getting it on.

I expect the problem is the way our pullys are designed. Not they are wrong they are just deep.

Tony - I'm holding a Moss 460-990 in my hand. Made by Flennor, the belt says: AVX10x900LA. I assume this is 10mm x 900mm. I know my way around an LBC, and NO amount of fiddling would get this thing on. Is the latest Moss belt a different brand/size? Or am I just a dolt? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Can you tell me what brand and if there are any markings?

My Pep Boys special alternator belt measures 35.5 inches with part number 35513 and fit fine on my 74.5 B. I expect the problem you are having is that you are using a metric belt /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

35.5in x (25.4mm/in) = 901.7mm, I'd imagine a 900mm should fit fine. What width is the belt?
