Fan shroud attachment - how?

My 65 BJ8 didn't come with a fan shroud so I finally bought one, which I will paint red (correct?). There are no holes in the top of my radiator but there is some indication there may have been a hole or something that has been soldered over and painted.

So, how is the shroud mounted? Call me clueless. I can't conceive of drilling holes in the radiator.

They are soldered on. The original flange may have had some holes and the painted over indication is probably just some solder build up that remained. You probably should have a radiator shop mount the new fan shroud (may need to be boiled out, rodded, pressure tested, etc.) and then you paint the fan shroud red afterwards.

Cheers,
John

Tell me there is another way! I just got the radiator back from the shop after being boiled out, rodded and pressure tested, painted and have installed it.

Does it take a special technique to solder?

JB Weld? Liquid metal?

John,

Off the topic... The picture you have under your signature is really outstanding... captures the spirit and the beauty of this fine automobile...

Problem is the whole top is soldered on so if you get it too hot you could compromise the seal. I wouldn't suggest you do it yourself unless you have lots of soldering experience on radiators. Call the shop and ask if they can do it for you. For them it's probably a 5 minute job.

JB Weld is great stuff but if the fan guard falls off into the blade you can really screw up some things including anyone standing around. I wouldn't trust it as a permanent fix for this application.

Hi Ron,

Thanks! Here's some info on how it was created.

John,

The website causes my mouth to water... What a beautiful site!!!

Too bad I can't do the same for my little ol' MGA... It also has nice lines as does the Healey...

Thanks again...

I sheepishly took it back to the radiator shop and said "Don't laugh - I expected it to bolt on" He soldered it on while I waited and said Merry Christmas No charge. Good shop.

Note the afermarket shroud doesn't leave room for the hose if mounted in the exact same position as original. Have to move it over a half inch.

P.S. None of them have much space betwen the hose clamp and shroud. Generally the shroud is cut down by 1/2" on the RH side.---Keoke
