Factory Re-Conditioned MGB
Following the lead of some gun manufactures Nanjing-MG officially announced today that they have plans to offer factory re-conditioned MGB’s alongside their new offerings for the North American market. Factory spokesman Fuso Badow gave the press a tour of the annex last Friday. “We aim to keep the cars as original as possible. Each body will be stripped of all parts, then the shell along with the doors and hood will be dipped to strip all of the old rust and paint. Then our body shop will repair those shells that can be saved, while about 5% will be re-cycled for parts. All bodies will be repaired with original Heritage parts so that the fit will as good as original. The cars will appear to be new in every way, while respecting the intent of the original designers when making minor mechanical changes.”
“Each repaired shell is prepped and painted in the original factory colors. This will give us a wide variety of colors to please our customers, as well as enthusiasts who want their cars to be as original as possible.” Each car will then be fitted with rebuilt suspensions and all-new brake components. The interiors will feature all leather seats with covers made at our own shop on-site. It appears much of the work will be performed at the building 251 annex near Nanjing-MG’s factory in Shanghai, China with smaller components such carburetors and instruments being rebuilt by small local firms with shops on or near the factory. The original BMC, and Rover V-8 engines are rebuilt, then run in on test stands on site. Each car will get all-new upgraded wiring with new starters and alternators. The old bullet connectors will be retained, but better grade wire and relays will be added to improve reliability. “Almost every part we need to build these cars is available, but our plans are to re-use every part from the cars we bring in. The stripped parts are all cleaned then sorted into bins for each set of years the part is correct for. Even trim fasteners that can be saved are put into piles for reuse. Each car will appear 99% original inside and out. Only very observant enthusiasts will be able to tell the exterior difference between our cars, and an original Abingdon built car.” Final assembly of the cars will take place on a small line not unlike that at the Morgan factory. Each lot of 25 cars will be from the same series with identical specifications and will take about a week to assemble. Final rectification of the cars is on site with each car test driven around the city, and given a final tune on a dynometer.
Nanjing-MG plans to offer these cars for sale at prices ranging from $17,000 for basic 4 cylinder models to $22,000 for modified V-8 models and early 1965-67 cars. “Right now, this is just a pilot program, but we hope to be able to offer up to 1200 cars per year. We have already bought, and begun disassembly of 500 cars in order to begin production. We have several lots of rolling bodyshells and parts ready for production beginning this summer, with an additional 350 cars still stuffed in containers awaiting disassembly. Our buyers estimate that there are over 25000 MGB’s in North America that can be economically reconditioned and brought back for re-sale. This will give each of our dealers several cars per year. This project will provide huge amounts of free publicity, and help ignite new interest in an old brand many of our customers will fondly remember. If this program is successful there are also plans for rebuilt MG Midgets, with later models lowered and equipped with lightweight rotary engines. Also, we wish to reinforce that the brand will be known as MG and that MG will stand for Morris Garages. The “Modern Gentleman” name is simply a special way to introduce the brand to our Asian customers. Even though we can’t reproduce the original feel of Abingdon here in China, we hope that everyone will give our cars a chance.”
The “Special Tuning” shop will also provide restored MG’s for the planned factory MG museum on site. “We hope to have a lot of visitors here in Shanghai who come from all over the world to see both the new factory, and the smaller shop where the reconditioned MGB’s will be assembled. Visitors will have the option of buying and taking delivery of an MGB at our factory showroom.” The first few cars that have been finished have been taken apart and assembled many times to train the workshop staff, and resolve the final specifications to be offered in the production models. The vintage cars have proved popular around the city as locals have offered to buy them from the testers for twice the planned asking price.
Here is a list of some of the features the cars will include:
All-new 5 speed transmissions, except pre-’68 models will have the original 4 speed unit with an optional overdrive.
All new starters, alternators, fuel pumps, wiring, and electronic ignition for better tuning and reliability
All-new brakes, reproduced to original factory specifications

But today is April 1st too!
