Faccet type pump operation

Hi Chaps, I have just installed a facet type pump to replace the dead SU I found on in situe and the leaking mechanical pump that was in use.

Its all good no leaks and fuel coming through. However I was expecting the pump to stop when it fills the float bowls and gets up to pressure.

Does this kind of pump work differently to the SU's and just keep pumping away?

Mine just kept on pumping all the time. Then it slowly gave up after about 3 years and 6000 miles.

Cheers guys I guess there had to be a downside, still at the price difference I guess I could install a few more as backups.

Anyone installed a pressure sensor in the fuel line?

I still think buying a New S.U fuel pump as a replacement is cheaper in the long run! They last many years at least mine did! However the facet is great for a backup just in case! I am now installing my facet with a 3 way switch and fuse in a handy location so i can switch over on the fly if i have to!

It's funny - when I first resored my 100 in the early 80's I installed one of these pumps and it sounded just like an SU. It would click until the carb bowls filled uo and then it would stop. I put a new one in (just for the heck of it) about 10 years ago, keeping the old one as a spare. It clicks continuously.

I liked the old one better - I may swap it back in.

The Facet pump mounts nicely on an MGB gearbox mount Moss no. 413-050 ( $5) and will quiet it down quite a bit. I prefer an SU pump because I love the sound of them and for the most part are pretty reliable but have used Facet pumps in a pinch. The same pump is used on Onan and Generac RV generators and is available at NAPA stores for $40. They work best pushing fuel so you will have problems if you mount it too high in relation to the fuel in the tank.
