Hey Tom, Ever see one of these? We had one in the hanger in Olathe Kansas back in 57. It was used by Westinghouse for testing J-46 engines. They pulled them off of the carriers as they scorched the wooden overlaid decks. The one we had is now under restoration in San Diego, to be placed when done on the US Midway! I don't know how many times I was in and out of that aircraft! Nice to know she's being preserved.

 
Paul - is that the famous "Gutless Cutlass"? If you take off your glasses and have a few manhattans, resembles the DH Vampire:

I always thought the F7U looked like the ancestor of the F-14. The "Gutless Cutlass" was ahead of its time...the jet engines of the time simply didn't make enough power to take full advantage of the airframe.

One of the YF7Us ended up as a playground piece at Wheaton Regional Park in Maryland. It ended up being scrapped around 1980. I keep hoping it turns up in one of the park maintenance yards, but that hasn't happened yet.

It's amazing just how many of these old warbirds are for sale to the general public. Here's a Viper for $99,000! Cheap, probably 10% of it's original cost! Anyone interested? A lot more out there!:devilgrin: PJ

 
But, you'll notice most of the jet warbirds available are not from U.S. inventories. That is because the Government has some insane fear of letting these planes fall into the wrong hands. I mean, what good would an F-84 or an F-101 be to America's enemies? The almost fanatical obsession with the Iranians getting anything remotely related to an F-14 fleet has led to the planes being completely destroyed, let alone being left in storage at Kingman. It literally takes an act of Congress to operate a former military jet these days. That's what it took for the Collings Foundation to fly their F-4, and they are going through similar hoops trying to get an F-105 airborne.
 
Yup, Your right! There's a few Brit jets out there available. Lotta old stuff coming out of Russia. Russian stuff is not my cup of tea, even though there is a high demand for reciprocating Yaks in the aerobatic family. 50 Gs can buy a good one. Me, I like my instruments in English! :highly_amused: PJ
