F-117

Back in the day, when I was a radar evaluation team lead, one of my good friends, and a Captain I worked with, was assigned to a project so secret that not even I, with a TS clearance, had a clue what he was working on. Probably the unit commander was the only one privy to what John was doing. We only knew that he would be gone "somewhere" for weeks at a time. Not even his family knew where he was going or why.

Years later, I caught up with John and, since it was now declassified, I learned what he had been doing those years in the past - he had been working on radar testing for the F-117 program (at some location that doesn't exist in Nevada).

I like that. Assigned to work at a location that doesn't exist!

Like clicking a link on a webpage, and getting a page saying "You have reached a page that doesn't exist."

415th, "Nighthawks". Late '80's to early '90's stationed at a base somewhat removed from the "usual" non-existent one.

And I much preferred the link that stated: "You have come to the end of the internet". :p

“Skunk Works” by Ben Rich is a good read about the LockheedMartin secret design facility and the development of the F-117 among others…

and to bring it (slightly back) to cars the PO of my Midget worked for Lockheed Martin in Florida and the car came of the road in about 1993 when he was rearended leaving the parking lot. He put it in his garage where it stayed until I got it in 2004. (back to secret planes)

My best friend's son recently retired from AF where his last duty was mechanic on the F117. I asked him once what he did on it and his answer was of course, "I'd have to kill you if I told you."
