Virtuoso musicians, violinists (ala Vladimir H.)?
The other two guys were stand-ins for Samuel, who himself was Jerome's replacement, having left for a while to pursue other interests before returning to help out when Jerome fell ill.
What was Jerome's less well known nickname, shared with a cinematic pig?

Well OK, is someone going to come out and give the answer?
I get my local TV from the Chicago area and my kids need to watch these guys every Saturday night on the "U" (if you are from the Chicago area, you know what I mean). Their favorite is Jerome, but almost everyone's is. Tragically, after the big fame hit Jerome, the youngest Horwitz brother, had a stroke and his brother Samuel had to step up.
In addition to those two other guys who came later (who are not nearly as loved as the first three or four), at the end of the team, the "leader" (according to Homer Simpson, he was their leader) began to make plans to reform the group with himself, one of the little-loved replacements, and an actor that had played in several movies with the others, but not one of them, to replace Louis. Who was the almost 7th member?
C'mon, I will now allow Googling. Give me some straight out answers!!

While Emil Sitka was a talented practitioner of the art I don't believe including him would have worked any better than Besser or Wardell standing in for Jerome and Samuel.
Everyone seems to agree on the "leader" and many on their "favorite" but I believe that Louis was the lynchpin of the team. I don't think it could have worked without him.

Joe Besser and Curly Joe DeRita were the standins for Jerome and Samuel. Jeromes nickname was "Babe" cause he was the youngest. He appeared as a sleeping passenger in a train car during one of Samuel's.....oh heck, Curly appeared in a cameo in one of Shemp's first shorts. The boys are searcing for someone in a train car, and they stop next to a man taking a nap in his seat with a bowler hat over his face. There's some suspiciously familiar snoring coming from the hat, under which was Curly with a full head of hair.
