Extra 948 and 1098 Engines

Just wanted to judge any possible interest level. I've got some engines removed from Spridgets that I have no use for. It seems like a shame to dispose of them. I'd rather give them to somebody who can use them. Here's the deal - they are disassembled. I typically disassemble my engines and put the block on a storage shelf. I throw away all of the common fasteners and bits I would never reuse. What you get is a block, a head, a crank, rods with pistons, main caps, front and rear plates, side covers, timing chain cover, flywheel, etc. Here's what I have:

Qty (2) 9CG - 948cc taken from 1961-1962 Spridgets
Qty (2) 10CC - 1098cc taken from 1965-1966 Spridgets

I have a retired '62 Midget racer with a 1275cc engine and I'm planning to build two '60 Bugeyes with Sebring bonnets that I had shipped from the UK. I currently have a collection of five loose 1275cc engines. When these projects are complete, I will have two 1275cc engines to spare. I'm located in Dallas, Texas and have no interest in shipping these parts. I'm also not in a big hurry to dig all of this stuff out of my garage. If someone local or from a neighboring state can use this stuff, let me know. I've got friends who race, so the 1275's will never be tossed. Unfortunately, it may be more difficult to find homes for the 948's and 1098's. It just seems a shame to dump them.

Make a suitable crate and ship it to Texas with return shipping paid. All Randyz would need to do is load it up and call the shipping company. Hate to see good parts scrapped.
The guy I got my MG Midget from said there were 2 more engines where picked the car up from. I said I would take them but by the time he got back to get them the owner had sent them to the dump!!

David - that's actually a good idea. But how would I ever know the details of how to make a suitable container for a 948, and the cost of return shipping? It *could* work, but there's a lot of if's and guesses.

Thanks.
Tom M.

I know that there are shipping companies who will pick-up items and then crate and ship them. I've used them years ago when I built some equipment in my garage and then needed to ship it all to a factory location. I can't remember how costly it might have been. It might cost more than simply finding engines in your neck of the woods. These engines may simply get donated to a local shop that deals with British car services.

Hi Randy,
I own a Sprite and also a Morris Minor Traveller. I’m far away, but I had a thought as I hate to see engines thrown away. There might be some folks near you with Morris Minors that may be looking to upgrade and/or rebuild an engine to have one sitting on the shelf as a spare. Would it be OK if I attached a link to your post about the engines on the Morris Minor forum?
Let me know,
Pat

Sure, that's fine with me.

You can put anything on a pallet and ship easy with USHIP.com. All you need to know is the weight.
Not so easy. These engines are disassembled, so that's hundreds of pounds of loose parts. They would need to be crated, packed, weighed, and shipped. I'm not willing to do that.
