External Hard Drives

It's amazing how much hard drive storage has improved in such a short time. Looking for an external drive this morning, I was amazed to find this drive which can be had from 1 to 16 TB at a low cost! I have no idea what I'd do with 16 TB of storage! The 2 TB would do fine for me and they even come in pretty colors! (y). PJ

Depending on what you keep, space can fill up pretty quick. I pull down old movies and tv from the 50s to current. And as the shift to higher details occurs I have some movies that go as large as 4-5g in size. I try to look for lower quality formats, less than HD, but getting harder to find for current stuff. And no, it isn't smut, just mainstream stuff...

Is that just an enclosure where you add your own SSD stick? Do you have a link?

Basil, according to what I read they are ready to plug into a USB and start using. They come in various storage sizes from 1 gig to 16 gig of storage, priced accordingly. I think the 16 gig is around $160.00, which might be less. One thing is for sure, I have no idea just how good they are.

16TB (your original post said TB, not GB) would be huge for an SSD drive with such small enclosure. Something doesn't add up. Do you have a link to the product page you're looking at?

What I have plugs in with a USB cable and needs to be plugged into an outlet with a transformer to cut the voltage. It's about 5inches by 6 inches and a little over an inch wide case. Not something to drop in a pocket.

Sorry to be a "doubter" but it looks like a scam..... Just my 2 cents

Paul, I'm sure you've heard the old adage "if it sounds too good to be true?"

Take a look here: https://www.scamwatcher.com/scam/view/513485

As soon as I saw 16TB SSD for $109 I smells rotten fish. My advice - stay away, Stay far away. I would advise sticking to known vendors with established reputations.

PS: They have a picture that shows a "super fast" read speed of 520MB/s. Ummm, that's not super fast. It's not even fast.

Considering the website name: "nivttdogcattoy"

And the fact that it's a WordPress hosted site,

And their physical address:

HUOYU TECHNOLOGY CO.,LTD.Bao An Qu Xi Xiang Da Dao Bao Yuan Hua Feng Zong Bu Jing Ji Da Sha B-335, Shen Zhen, China

And the other items advertised there ...

I join the doubter camp.

On speculation I sent for two 2TB ones a year ago. Arrived D.O.A.... no operating system recognized them.

Thanks fellas for that info! Looking elsewhere. (y)

Ordered a 2 TB Seagate yesterday. It's all I need to store some photos and cleaning up other drives from older computers.

Well, guess what! My computer won't recognize the new external hard drive! I've run every program in it and it still won't recognize the new external drive. Nothing wrong with the USB plugs as everything else works just fine, so I'm at a loss. Any clues to what might have happened to both drives as not being recognized? PJ
So, I'm guessing something is wrong with the computer. Makes no sense to me. Haven't tried it on the Linux machine. :censored:

Just a WAG….. Is it possible that the drive has to be formatted for your computer?

Well, that's discouraging. And if the computer won't recognize that the new drive is even plugged into the USB port ... not good. You can't format a drive if the computer doesn't even know it's there.

What vendor sold you the drive?

Another thought (because I see this at work all the time). If these external drives are actual HDDs with rotating platters, you may not have enough power from the USB port to spin them up - particularly if you are using a laptop. I have had multiple "bad" externals suddenly work fine when plugged into a desktop computer with a beefy power supply. Older externals used to have a provision for an external wall-wart style power supply, but this seems to have largely been phased out from the newer ones I see. Using a powered USB hub might help or at least be a viable test to see if this is in fact the problem.
