TR2/3/3A Extension Piece On TR3 Bump Stop

Inquiring minds want to know. What is the purpose of the extension (tongue like appendage) that sticks down and back from where the bump stop hits on a TR3?? I've seen a TR2 frame, and it's not there. It's also not on any TR4 frames I've seen. What's it there for??? See attachment...
 
Looks like it might box in the bracket to give strength to the bracket but no idea why is hangs down. Maybe its non-function is the reason why they removed it on later TRs.
 
I can't say for sure, but maybe it was used when they were painting the bodies before assembly to the frames. Or maybe it was used in storage or transport from the factory which made the bodies to the final assembly factory in Canley.

I'm not sure that's what it is but "rock shields" and such were optional equipment on 40's US cars and they look similar.

There were tons of gravel roads in operation around the world and a gravel shield would make sense...

I know that rocks on gravel roads would hit it but what is behind it that is so important that it needs to be shielded ? Nothing that important. The rubber bumper itself ?
 
For some reason the picture of your steel extension flap appears to bent straight down where mine extends outward at a forty-five degree angle? I thought it was a rock catcher as well. The cavity above it sure holds enough rocks and debris. My hand is also reminding me that it was designed as a martial arts exercise for when the hand slips off the wrench in that area as well. The steel extension flap is not bent but goes straight down. If yours is bent, it means that something or someone bent it.

I'm redoing my front suspension right now and took a close look at mine. These so-called "gravel deflectors" cannnot be there for that because they are behind the front suspension. Any gravel spray would hit the suspension then the inside of this "flap".

Harry - Mine are flat in line with the steel part above where it is welded to form the box. When viewing straight on from the side they extend straight down. I'm almost done with my front suspension and steering job, and I looked again and I notice that if you view the "flap" from the front, there is a definite side sweep to it towards the free bottom end, towards the outside of the car. I'd say they look angled out about 30 degrees but that just follows the slope of the welded box above.

If yours are bent differently, then that person I mentioned above might have been someone at the factory during assembly. They did odd and strange things for whatever reason.

I can see the advert now. Each tower flap custom made by hand! Just another mystery to ponder. Mine definitely extends down straight about an inch and half and then sweeps fortyfive directly back toward the inner rear fender.
Your probably right about it having something to do with storage or transport at the factory. I can't think of any other function. Unless it's there to catch the lower wishbone arm if it shears off but I would think the whole thing would fold in that case.
