TR2/3/3A Exhaust

Excuse my ignorance since I'm a newby to the TR3 forum. The underside of the car seems to have two mufflers in line with the exhaust. I know that they don't have catalytic converters so what is the second one for?

Somewhere along production, Triumph decided to add a second muffler because having only one just didn't muffle enough. I believe that it's been popular to call the second one a "resonator"...which is supposed to cancel out certain unpleasant frequencies.

I removed the resonator from my 3A and added an Ansa twin tailpipe. After a couple of short drives, I put it back up on the lift and replaced the resonator. Without the rear muffler, even with the Ansa, it was WAY too loud for my tastes and all of the neighbors taste too, I'm sure. It would bark at every shift, no worse than a fart-can seen on many teenagers cars, but pretty darn close. For me, the resonator is needed and thus the reason that Triumph added it.

Ditto. Just too loud for my taste without the second muffler. I added a turned-down chrome tip, which did help, but I like the sound much better with two glasspacks. It's still not quiet by any means, but it's at least possible to carry on a conversation.
