exhaust valves

About 2 months ago my machine shop discovered that I had the wrong valves. No problem, I figured out that the head I had needed Spit IV type valves, ordered them and dropped it all off. Now he tells me that the exhaust valves are a tiny bit to small.
I took a look and they are a very tiny bit smaller maybe .5mm or so. They are the correct part#
What he says is that there is not enough overlap between the valve and the seat. How much should there be? the factory manual shows a 1.5 mm wide band touching which these valves should have, but will be right up to the edge. is this correct? any ideas, I am getting real frustrated and prime driving season is about to start.
