Exhaust question

Got my parts in from APT today, and I have a question on the exhaust. I was expecting a straight pipe back to the muffler -- as I have on my stock 948 and as came on the 1275.

The pipe I received has an odd kink in it that doesn't seem to make sense, and doesn't match the photo on the APT website. Did I receive the wrong bit? I didn't get home until after hours, so I couldn't call APT directly with my question.

The exhaust I just got for my '63 Midget is straight back.

Looks identical to the 1 1/4" exhaust that I removed from both Bugeyes. They both had the kickup, and that kickup was not up over the rear axle. The kickup was behind the rear axle and brought the muffler up to the rear mounting point.

It doesn't look like the Maniflow system that my Dad has, I'll be over there today and I'll check it out and maybe snap a few pics.

That bend is to clear the axle. I doubt you will be able to fit over because of how tight it is. I had mine made at an exhaust shop and they ran it over the axle. VERY TIGHT! The cool thing that they did was run a rubber hanger from a shock bolt. I had a longer one running through just for that reason. I have seen the exhaust bent to run under the axle. My suggestion would be to run it back and see what fits best--either up and over or under.

I was thinking it might have been kinked like that to go over the axle. Car isn't really in a spot where I can test it right now, though.

Drew:

I don't like it. The pipe is too small and bends to much.

IMHO, buy a LCB and a muffler, have a local shop make a nice size straight pipe to connect them, at least 1 1/2.

I have a LCB (maniflow) that also came from APT. The invoice says this is a 1-5/8" exhaust system. I have a feeling that they may have packed the wrong bits...

I was expecting this (from the APT website):

ES031.jpg

Part number on the invoice was correct, but there is no part number on the exhaust at all, so no way to really check.

Drew,

I think you are right on target with the wrong parts being shipped. I've purchased two Maniflow LCB headers and exhaust systems for the race cars from Dave at APT and they both look like the photo in your post. The two systems were purchased a year apart too.

I think a call to APT is in order...

Dave is probably working today, and best yet, he answers the phone.

Would anyone happen to have a stock muffler setup that they want to get rid of? The kind that has the resonator and the muffler and curves around and comes out on the passenger side? I am getting ready to start on my exhaust system soon. I am going to have one pipe that goes straight out with a cut out valve and another that goes through the stock quiet exhaust when the valve is closed. This is going to require a Y pipe and some experimenting and I hate to buy new exhaust pipes and start cutting on them because they cost money. Looking for a decent used stock setup to work with. I know lots of folks pull off the stock pipes and put straight monza muffler setups or whatever. Man, that sprite took a lick. Heartbreaking.

I have the stock setup I took off my '63 Midget...nothing wrong with it except I'm using a 1275 manifold so needed a different pipe.

What do you want for it and how much do you think it would cost to ship to 28704? I have no problem with it being cut into 2 or 3,4 sections to get the package nice and small. I can weld it back together no problem. I just want a nice and quiet mode and a straight pipe mode. I already found me a nice cutout valve that I think will work perfect.

Here are the pics of my Dads system, I think they sent you the wrong one. Looks like from APT's website they sent you the Morris Minor one.

Thanks for those pics, 68Sprite. I'll be making a call on Monday to get this sorted out.
