Exhaust question

This past weekend I went up to drive/work on my 67 sprite and after driving it about 10 miles and then parking it overnight, when I started it in the morning it was extremely loud.

I stopped the engine and took a peek under the car, the exhaust pipe had basically fallen down out of the engine. The muffler was still attached, and I saw that the rubbery holder near the back of the car had corroded and broke.

I went to the autoparts store and got a new hanger and put everything back where it seemed to go, it's much quieter now, but still very loud and I think I need to change the gasket/seal where the pipe meets the manifold, that's where my question come up.

When I got under the car, it basically looked like #5 on this moss drawing

but those parts are listed as 1968 .. I guess that's not a big deal and I should go with what looks like it matches my car, but the the other question I have is, how does the pipe stay put up there, the part that bolts on and off doesn't seem to hold the pipe very tightly and there doesn't seem to have been a hanger up front to give it support, does the seal/gasket somehow hold the weight of the pipe?

Heading back up in 2 weeks and I'd like to have the parts waiting for me since the weather is getting very sprite friendly /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

16, 17, 18 hold everything in place at the front end. No real pressure on the gasket if that bracket is in place.
 
I'm not sure I understand your question. The "Donut" that clamps between the manifold and the exhaust pipe make a tight seal when the three clamp bolts are evenly tightened.
 
the exhaust pipe has a flanged end that sits in the clamp. tha manifold has a similar flange. the donut is the gasket between the two. nothing can slip out when clamped.
 
16, 17 and 18 help out also, w/o them eventually the pipe flange will wear and blow out of the manifold clamp.

The gasket looks pretty worn so I'm guessing that's why it slipped out once the hanger went. I didn't see anything that looked like 16,17,18 under there ;(
 
I make #16,17 & 18 with a piece of "EMT" pipe (electrical conduit) and a muffler clamp. Drill 3 1/4" holes in the EMT (two for the clamp and one to attach to the trans flange)and you are set. Not stock but cheap, strong, and easy to get.
