TR4/4A Exhaust on a 4A

Well, I haven't had much time to work on the 4A, but I should have her running next weekend.

In the meantime I'm going to definitely need an exhaust system. What would you recommend? It's a solid axle, twin tailpipe. Is Falcon any good? How about Monza? I have an Ansa on my MGB and like the sound of it, but can't seem to find anything.

If I were to put a new exhaust on my 4A, I am pretty sure it would be a Falcon SS exhaust. I think Monzas are pretty much junk, but they sound nice.

Must disagree.Installed this Monza back in '91. It still looks great and I swear sounds better now than the day installed. As Randall has said, with the absence of lead, mild steel exhaust systems last a very long time.

Depends on what you want, I guess. I've been having a local shop build custom systems for all my Triumphs, and I am very pleased with both the results and the price. Best of all, I don't have to even slide under the car, let alone try to work with the rust falling in my eyes and mouth!

He uses seamless glasspack mufflers (what we used to call Cherry Bombs) that seem to last basically forever. The 10 year old one I cut off the wrecked car was just as sound as the day it was installed (although the pretty aluminized coating was somewhat discolored by burnt oil & grease).

It was just a bit loud for my tastes, though, so I asked him to tone it down a bit on the TR3. The result is just perfect, IMO.

BTW, I've got a couple of those Monza dual chrome tip mufflers stashed in the garage somewhere. Those things weigh as much as the entire system from the TR3A! And, as you can see in Jay's photo above, they are too thick and hang down under the car. They're for sale cheap if anyone wants them.

Don't forget that you have to add the price of the intermediate pipes to the Stebro system because they do not come with them. I have the Stebro system on my TR6 and just love it. Ten years ago I was able to find a guy who had two NOS systems and he sold me one for $800.00. He said he was going to reproduce the system with the remaining one. Ten years ago $800.00 was still alot of money.

I have the Falcon system on my solid axle 4A, and it replaced a straight pipe single muffler system that was on for years...until the high sound level became tiring.

The Falcon is very well made, and the sound level and tone is just right for my typical outings....day trips on back country New England roads.

If I was installing this system again, I would try the newer style band type clamps that Moss and others carry vs, the stock clamps.

I also have a Monza installed on my 4A, since the mid 90s. My car is garaged, in a mild climate, and rarely gets driven, so I am not surprised that it has lasted this long. What I don't like about it is that it is made of thin wall mild steel, and is painted, but apparently not primed. I just am not impressed with the workmanship. I really like the sound, but prefer the quality of the Falcon systems, for my money.

As I understand it, Monza's can only be "adapted" for twin pipe applications. Is this true? I'm most likely going with a Falcon or Bell because I need the clearance to get up my driveway.

Also where do most of you do your shopping for parts?
