Exhaust Manifold Removal

I need to remove some stripped manifold studs. Has anyone had any experience pulling the exhaust manifold without also pulling the carbs and intake manifold, or should I just bite the bullet and pull them too?

Lyon, in my experience, shortcuts just don't work. Suck it up, take the time, spend the extra effort and do it right.
I've spent many an hour looking at stuff like this, and the quick and dirty approach just doesn't get it.
I'm sure, however, that there will be several people telling you to just "go for it". But, they all drive Yugos.

I just replaced my head gaset and it seems to me that you need to take the head off to do this. jtb

Lyon,

I just replaced the studs on my exhaust manifold. The best way is to jack up the car and remove the exhaust manifold connection to the exhaust pipe. Then take off the air cleaners. Next, remove the carbs and take off the bolts that hold the intake and exhaust manifolds on.
It is doable in one evening even though it looks
like a nightmare. The only problem that I had was that I had to disconnect the accelerator pedal so that I could get the last nut off and leave room to take off the manifolds. I replaced the studs and now it works fine. It was well worth the effort.
