Exhaust leak will cause what?

I'll combine 2 questions here, even though one doesn't have much to do with the other (maybe)

I noticed last night after adjusting the valves and trying to finally adjust the carbs right that there is a significant amount of exhaust blowing around the engine bay and it appears to be in that area.

What kinds of issues would an exhaust leak at the (original) headers cause?
and
I know I saw a thread on it somewhere, but it didn't come up under the search function, What about those Grose Jets(?) for the carbs (su-4)? Do they work? does the ball get clogged easily?

so, could this be a cause of backfiring and never running quite "right"?

I'm not meaning to sound dumb, but I just noticed this and have done everything else (battery, points-swapped for pertronix, spark plugs/wires, valves, timing, fuel pump & filters, carbs 4 or 5 times) and just can't quite "get it" to run consistantly.

It depends on what you mean by backfiring. If you mean popping noises coming out of the exhaust on overun, yes, exhaust air leaks can contribute to the problem. If you mean popping back from the carbs, it's not likely.

An intake (vacuum) leak can also cause similar problems, sometimes with intake pop back also.

In the first case, extra air is drawn into the exhaust & provides enough oxygen to ignite any unburned fuel.

In the second case, a lean mixture can burn so slowly that it is still burning when the intake valve opens for the next cycle & ignites the fuel charge in the intake manifold.

No comment on the Grosse jets.

I think Loki /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif has been assigned to hang out in my garage and tinker with something 2 minutes after I turn my back on the car.

I appreciate the comments, but I'm going on a wild goose chase (and surely adding to work that doesn't need to be done yet) and will be pulling the head this evening and replacing all intake/exhaust/head gaskets sometime this week.

that'd be a MOWOG troll. If you find a tiny deck of cards then he's probably teaming up with the lucas gremlin. The best bet is trying to appease them. Leave lots of half full bottles of automotive fluids and several extra broken (but I might need them someday)parts around to keep them occupied. Then they should leave your primary systems alone.
