Is there some kind of gasket material that can be used between the exhaust pipe and manifold in a Bugeye? Mine leaks somewhat, as evidenced by some areas of soot around the joint. It's also noisy, which is the main problem, and I think that the leakage is the cause. I've tried rearranging the joint, retightening that strange clamp, but no luck so far. I seem to remember, back in the dark ages, people used asbestos gaskets for this kind of thing. But obviously that's out, these days.
 
Exhaust paste sealer stuff, comes in a tube. Smear some arount the pipe part that the exhaust fits into. Not too much. It hardens and seales the joint. It will crack out when removeing. Try to get bot surfaces clean before useing it.

Without the goop I have found that joint impossable.

Paste-like English exhaust gasket sealant. Comes in a tin. Like shoe polish.

Hehehe, did a "local search" for that Doc. Apparently there is no shortage of outlets carring it if you are in the NY/NJ area!!!!!

Something I have used with success is a home-made gasket made from multi-layers of heavy duty aluminum-foil sandwiching muffler-paste!!
 
Should be some goop for sealing exhaust leaks at you local Auto place.
 
another trick is to coat the clamping surfaces of the clamp with motor oil before assembly... that way they "slide" together and give a better fit..

the oil cooks off rather quickly..
 
That should work nicely but does not fill the rust pockets or.........

Not much paste, only about a 1/16 all around.
 
hello, I just had the same problem, it turned out that i had a burr on one of the flange surfaces, ground it off and now it is tight and no leak so it worked for me good luck.
 
Make sure that the lower brace (between the trans and the header pipe) is secure or no matter how well you seal the joint together it will leak soon.

It also helps to have the bell housing clamp very loose, as well as the rear hangers, nad use a floor jack under the pipe so that you aren't asking the pipe clamp to pull things together. It's a fiddle, but with effort, it works.

Good idea! I'll try that. I think a big part of the problem is simply aligning things before tightening the clamp. I almost got it last time, but the signs of leakage are still there.
