EX186

[ QUOTE ]
One of means. ONE OF a kind. ie only one.

[/ QUOTE ]

One OFF would be obviously unique, but to say I'd like to have one of.... means I'd like to one of them; even if there's only one....

to complete being pedantic, see:

I've never heard the usage "one of" to mean "one of a kind".

I'd assumed the poster's use of "one of" in this context was a mishearing of "one off".

One off is complete in and of itself and doesn't require the reader to supply the missing "a kind".

It seems more clear to me.

Is "one of" for "one off" common American usage?

Was it Churchill that made the remark about one people seperated by a common language?

....though being an American now resident on Scotland for the past 20+ years I may just be a linguistic schizophrenic now.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Not me - one of a kind, I mean - I had a twin cam MGA & it was too unique for me!

I always considered "one of" to mean "one of a certain number made or in existence"...and "one off" to mean "one of a kind"

Hmmm

Well, about 2 weeks before you joined BCF was MG2006 - the biggest MG car show in the united states. In Gatlinburg.

That's funny.... to me it looks like that extended rear-end just makes it shaped even more like a wing!! Nice leading edge, nice trailing edge.... it looks like at 140 it should achieve lift-off, not stick better! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

For those who did not see my July 13 post of information on the EX186, here's a repeat:

Last night, Joe & Kathy Gunderson brought their EX186 to the MG Club, Rocky Mtn. Centre, meeting. For those who attended the car show at MG2006, you know that the long-rumored, aluminum-bodied, twin-cam, 1958 EX186 is not just a rumor, but a secretly-built MG factory fact. The MG2006 judges were so impressed, they awarded it the "Chairman's A" award.

Although Joe and Kathy have owned the car for nearly 25 years, they just completed its restoration. They did "carcheology" work first to determine the original color and parts, then replaced only those parts that were unusable. Even the steering wheel and gauges were reused and the original pale green paint on the aluminum floor left untouched. Although recovered, the original seats were reused--cut-down Bugeye Sprite seats with the steel replaced with aluminum. Joe believes that 3 of the 4 tires on the car when he bought it were even originals, but were in such poor condition, he had to replace them for safety reasons.

The DeDion rear suspension is a wonder to behold and the twin-cam, although not original, is spectacular! Unfortunately the owner of the original engine won't part with it, so Joe had to install one of his "spares."

I didn't know that the car was going to be at the meeting, so did not have my camera. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif So, if anyone who attended MG2006 has a photo, please post it so everyone on the forum can see what they missed.

Congratulations to Joe and Kathy for preserving an incredible piece of MG history--the "ultimate" MGA! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif (And one that even the Chinese can't buy. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif)

Post-script: I forgot to mention that when Joe's body/paint man media-blasted the body, he found 7 pieces of aluminum riveted together to form just one fender. Boy, talk about a poor-boy factory racing program--they had to use scraps to build it!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif
