We used to live in tornado alley (southern IL) and had one come through the outskirts of town. Luckily it was in a sparsely populated part of town so no deaths or injuries, but a lot of property and tree damage.

I'm from the part of the country where they are common enough that we go outside to watch and make up our own minds whether or not a funnel is going to touch down. What do weather men know?

Back in the 60’s there was a weatherman on one of the NYC TV stations that was predicting massive amounts of snow for the upcoming weekend. As it turned out the area only received a light coating and not what was predicted.
Well the very next week the restaurant association tried suing the TV station since their weather forecast caused lots of dinner cancellations in many of the restaurants in NYC.
Of course the restaurant association lost the suit.

Around here there's an old joke that the reason the National Weather Center is located in Oklahoma is because you can learn about all the nation's differernt types of weather here without having to travel. There's also the joke that we train the rest of the nation's weathermen because forecasting is so tough to do here.
