I was teaching my students notetaking skills and we got into a conversation about how "texting" is a great shorthand to use. Unfortunately I am a little behind in "textspeak" They gave me this website...its kinda fun.

Yeah, I see that sort of thing all the time.
On the lab reports that my students do in my classes.

And my children text me all the time, so I see it from them too. When I text-message back to my kids, I do it with proper grammar and spelling....or not at all.

And now we can all be "cool" cause we can understand it!!!!

Its getting harder to make the kids understand that this is a new language...its not "proper English" and can be used in notes etc. but not formal papers and assignments
 
I hate texting...... Guess I'm just a frump.
I go to the Cell phone store and they try to show me all the stuff the new phones can do, and tell me about all the extras included in the plan I can get. Then I say "That's nice. Can I get a phone. No, not a handheld media center. Just a phone. I'll take voicemail. that's all.
 
My son who is away at college, texts me several times a week. My mom who would kill me if I told her age, texts me more than she calls. I also have a 13 year old (no other explanation needed)
What I love is the way I can get the message discreetly. I flip it open, read it, close it and respond later. Of course I'm old fashioned and still spell it all out. I do need to learn to read it though...part of keeping up with the times as a Junior High teacher...
 
Problem with texting is that kids think they can spell that way all the time!
 
Its becoming a real challenge:

Today's writing prompt: Explain how the earth's surface changes.

Actual answer: There R 3 ways that the earth changes itz surface: earthquakes, volcanoes & weathering.
 
I thought this thread was about Texasspeak, ya know that language where partner and howdy is used a lot.
 
All anyone ever does here in the dorms is text message. It's silly. It's a telephone, you press eight buttons and there's a voice on the other end. And you don't have to look like an dolt by misspelling words and ignoring grammar! I can almost understand shortening long words, but changing "its" to "itz" and "the" to "tha" should be grounds for a thrashing. Kids these days...

I'm even too old for this stuff (at almost 35), and I'm generally a techie. I spent a few mintues texting with a friend this weekend, setting up a band rehearsal. The exchange took place over maybe 15 minutes.

A 2 minute phone call would have handled it all... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

On the other hand, for the occasional quick note it's very handy. Nice for a "I'll be late" kind of message.

And yes, I use proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
